Taking good pics!

Hey Ladies;

Curious if you guys took classes or just learned/read on your own?  I have a nice Sony camera, given as a gift a couple years ago and have no idea how to use it.  I want to get into photography and am curious about good resources (blogs, websites, books).  I also should read the manual:)

Thanks!

Re: Taking good pics!

  • Check your local community college, or even an art school. Most have continuing education, non-credit courses about basic SLR photography at a low price.

  • Is it an SLR camera?  I found a really great DVD on Amazon for my Canon SLR that teaches about all the settings of the camera and which situations to use the different settings.  I probably could have just read the manual, but I like that the video shows which buttons to push and how to navigate the screens and stuff.

  • The best advice that was ever given to me was zoom with your feet not with your lens.

    Get close.  SUPER close...back up take another shot.  Try messing with the focus and different lenses.

    I take about 15 pictures and maybe 5 or 6 come out awesome.  The others are good...it's all trial and error until you get the hang of it (imho)

    But, I know a couple art organizations and non profits offer classes in my area.  Like the botanical gardens and also the senior centers and a couple art non profits.

  • This website has some awesome information on it.

    Also, start off by reading the user manual. Sounds strange, I know.

  • Shooting a LOT, joining photography forums and getting CC on my images, and reading CC on other's images, oh and shooting some more, reading articles, my manual, books, watching online videos and tutorials.
