Legally changing name...

I'm planning on doing this in about 2 weeks (finally!) Anyone have any tips for making it an easier process???  I'm definitely not looking forward to going through all the hassle, but I really want to change my name nowadays, so I'm going to do it!

Re: Legally changing name...

  • I changed a few things at a time.  I went to the Social Security office and changed it there, and then took that letter to work and changed it.  I think a week later I went to my bank and the dmv. I was at the social security office for 15 minutes, and at the dmv for about 3 hours....
  • The social security office was the worst part, I sat there for almost 3 hours, so bring something to read. Then went to the DMV. The rest I kinda just kinda took my time with. Good luck

  • I did social security, DMV and then passport a year ago. I haven't done anything else. Lol. None of my credit cards have the correct name on them. My debit card does because we opened a joint account after I changed my name. Good luck. Hope you do better than me!
  • Mine was all pretty painless so far-but have not done the passport yet.

  • I didn't change my name when I got married, but changed it awhile ago (it's my Mom's last name).  After I did the DMV/SS change, I made a big list of every bill I paid, club I was in, etc. so I could keep track of the credit cards, bank accounts, student loans, etc. that needed to be changed and spent one afternoon busting them all out.  Except for my Hallmark Gold Crown card - that thing had the wrong last name for like 10 years - and then they sent me a new card and it somehow had the right last name on it!
  • Mine wasn't too bad. I took an afternoon off of work and just got everything changed over that day. Go to the SS office first, they'll give you a print-out that is your proof of name change. Then go to the DMV. Then I went to the bank, all the utility companies, called my credit card companies and called my student loan holders. I also stopped at the post office that day and filled out the application to change my passport.

The only thing that caused any trouble for me was work. It took forever to get everything changed (computer, email, phone number, pay stub, etc).
