what's the best e-reader?

I have a lot of travel coming up soon, and I am looking for a great e-reader.  What are the best ones?  Price is not the most important issue, but I'd like to stay under $300.   Is the Nook Color worth it?  Or is black and white the same?  Mostly I'd be reading chapter book type things... not a lot of children's books!

Would love to hear any advice you have!

Re: what's the best e-reader?

  • For chapter books, get a black and white reader.  It's easier on the eyes and the batteries last way longer (great for travel).

I love my kindle, but they all have plusses and minuses you'll need to weigh.

  • I wouldn't get a colour one as it likely has an LCD screen and will strain your eyes. Also since you are just reading text colour doesn't really matter.  I love my kindle, it has great battery length and the books are affordable.
  • I have a nook color.  I absolutely love it.  I haven't used it for long trips, but have ready it for about three hours straight without any issues.  I would definately consider it and it's under $250.

  • Definitely do your own research, I've gathered that the differences are more based on personal preference rather than quality.

Keep in mind that you may want a case, screen protectors, and possibly an extended warranty. After I bought those with my nook color, I was at $374.

  • I love my Kindle.I think it's great for traveling, easy to read and loads pages really well. Really efficient battery life too.

  • Ya gotta go and look and feel. I love the nook . . . I am not a Kindle person. I thought I would love the Kindle, but I just don't care for it's layout and feel. Nook all the way. (I have the b & w, but Nook color is certainly on my list in the future!)
  • Ah, the Kindle is awesome! I just completed my 16th 14hr trip overseas, and have found the kindle to be awesome!  Great battery life, so light and easy to take as carry on.  Plus, having the kindle stores means you can (if you have these) use it also on your smartphone, ipad, etc etc! Plus it is really easy on the eyes, no glaring screen - I LOOOOVE my kindle ;) Let us know what you decide! :)

  • I love my Kindle. I've had to charge it once the past two months, and it's really easy on the eyes. I also have the Kindle app on my iPhone, but as the screen is so small, it's kind of not worth it to read on it.

I like that it plays music, but you can't see what songs are next, and it's a bit of a pain to get to (Menu, Experimental, Play Music), so I just use my iPhone.

There are a lot of free books you can download, and if you have friends who have PDF's of books, or if you do, you can put those on your Kindle as well. There is also the book lending feature, but I'm a little weary of trying it, as it's only for 2 weeks, and you can only lend the book once.
