AW: We have a new addition to our family!!! PIP

Now we just need to pick a name!

We adopted a 3.3 month old puppy from the Animal Humane Society today. He's a lab/terrier mix all the way from Georgia.

I just put the kong in the freezer with a treat and PB plug as suggested in the dog thread below. We both have a lot of learning to do and are planning to find a training program that is right for us in a couple of months.

We took him for a couple of walks today and he was awesome on his leash for us. Now he's sleeping really good :)

  • awww which Humane Society? We live near the St Paul one, and just saw a similar puppy the other day :)

One word of advice... careful with the peanut butter when they're little like that.  We had to ease up on the pb for awhile with our puppy when we first got him.. it was causing some... um... unpleasant poop. ;)  We switched to puppy wet dog food for awhile, which seemed to help!

    have fun!

  • The Woodbury one. We went there yesterday and he was on hold, my husband not accepting that asked when it was up and called them around closing time to see if he was still there. They called him back after close to let us know he didn't end up getting picked up so we went up there today and waited for them to open.

    Thanks for the PB tip!

  • Awwww!  What is his name?  Is he brindle colored??  So cute.  Congrats!!

I would get all natural peanut butter for the Kong (no sugar or additives).

  • Thanks everyone! We're having a ton of fun with him. He is brindle colored, I could see it even better in the sun when we walked him, it's so pretty. He still doesn't have a name, we finally have given up for the night, we have been driving ourselves insane going back and forth with names. Can't imagine what it's going to be like trying to name a kid!! At least we'll have 9 months to toss names back and forth when that time comes.

  • Congrats, he is super cute!
  • awww -cute!  I highly recommend puppy kindergarten classes. (we used Animal Inn out in Lake Elmo)  Not only does it introduce very beginning obedience, it is a great opportunity to socialize with other dogs and start to work on your "pack" leader status.  Enjoy your time when your puppy is itty bitty - they get big fast!!  Big Smile
  • Congratulations!  He's adorable!
  • So adorable! Good luck with the training. Our lab was a very fast learner.

all of this!  We adopted our puppy (Puckett... yes, like Kirby) when he was 8 weeks old. He was 7 pounds or something, and I used to pick him up with one hand to carry him down the stairs.  He's now at least 60 pounds (hasn't been to the vet in awhile), and can reach his paws to my shoulders when he's standing.

As much as I loved seeing him grow up, I'm never going through the teething phase again ;)  Have lots of ice cubes on hand! And don't get freaked out when you step on a tooth in the carpet in the middle of the night. haha

We also did a puppy kindergarten, just to get some basics.  I'd definitely recommend it! We got him out to the dog park at like 3 and a half months, too.  The vet said to wait until he had his bordatella shots, etc.  I think that made a huge difference- he's very friendly, but also knows when to leave someone alone.  I think that's due quite a bit to being around people and dogs so much since he's been little.

    have fun!

  • Thanks everyone! I haven't had a puppy since I was 4yrs old, so of course I don't remember anything about the housetraining and teething! :)

He's been great with walking/running on a leash, which is awesome because then it tires him out for when we get home.

I think I am going to get a buster cube today for feedings, he wolfs down his food and the info from the AHS says to feed him about 4x a day and that feeding should take 10-15 mins, there's no way it will take that long out of a dish for him.

He woke us up a handful of times last night, looking forward to that getting better. Any tips? We did take him for a walk/run right before bedtime hoping it would help.

  • Be careful about the running - are you taking him for a run or he's just romping on his own?  We're not runners but our vet told us not to let our dog really run for a few months while their bones harden/calcify and if you let them go hard core, it can set them up for issues down the road.  Walks were fine but running was a no-no.  (easier said than done for us - our dog is lab/golden retriever.  I think that they have 2 speeds until they get a little bit older - laying down and running as fast as they can!)

We never fed our dog more than 3 times and now she's down to 2.  I've seen suggestions for putting food into a muffin tin to slow dogs down too.

As far as getting up -you might be stuck with it for a bit.  Our dog did best in a kennel at night (still does!).  When she was really little, we'd take her out right before bed and generally would be up sometime in the middle of the night to go out again.  They just can't hold it all night when they're little. Once their body, and bladder, grow a bit, I think you'll find that you naturally have to go out less.

  • Thanks for the tips! The running is more like a romp and him pulling on his leash and wanting to run so we do for a block or so and then walk again. For us it's more like speed walking.

  • At that age you should be doing 1-2 potty breaks during the night.

3 months old = potty break every 3 hours +1 so every 4 hours.

You should post more pics (hint hint)  :-)

  • Ditto, more pictures!

We only fed our puppy twice a day from the beginning.  The first few weeks we had him, I went home from work at lunch to let him out.  I'd usually give him a small treat then, but he only got two full meals during the day.  Try one of those buster cubes (we will use one) or any kind of treat-dispensing toy.  I've also heard of getting some kind of metal collar or something similar and lying in the dish.  It just creates an obstacle for them, so they have to slow down their eating.

As far as waking up in the night? Puckett did that until he was probably 6 months old.  He started sleeping through the night around the time he stopped teething.  If he's whining, try putting his crate in your room.  He could just be lonely.  We actually slept in the living room on the pull out couch for awhile (that's where our a/c unit is, and it was the summer) anyway.  I think that helped the sleeping-through-the-night issues too.

  • The first night we kept him in his crate in the kitchen, last night he wouldn't stop whining and wimpering and a little barking so finally with how tired I was I just had him sleep next to me and he only woke up 2x to go to the bathroom. We even moved his crate into our room before I finally gave up. I loved snuggling with him but we don't want him to sleep with us every night, so we have to figure something out.

We also have to work on the bite inhibition stuff, he bites when playing. I hope that doesn't take too long, he's close to 4 months old and everything I have read so far says he should be broken of that by 4 months.

I will get more pics soon, he's keeping us quite busy. I also discovered he's a climber, we got a baby gate from Janell and he can climb right over it. :(

We read so much stuff on this, but here's what worked best for us.  Yipping or whining "OW!" when he bit us. (mimicking another puppy.)  As long as he's not doing it to be aggressive, it should wear off, I think.  Getting him out with other dogs will help too; that's how they learn what's playing and what's hurting.

We're doing the OW! or I am going to start yelping next time he does it. I also have a play date set up for Saturday with a friend's dog that will help teach him that as well. She's willing to let my dog bite her dog so mine can learn and socialize :) Her neighbor's puppy has been over learning it too so her dog is used to it and will help my dog learn it.
