Re: Help needed for a December 2011 bride!

  • Hello and congratulations for being a December bride!  Best of luck with the wedding planning!

As for honeymoon, H and I decided to postpone ours because I am a teacher and with the wedding and holidays, I wasn't going to have enough vacation days to cover it without going on a "break" time.  Thus, we will be going in April to Maui.  We are staying at a resort and will be going for 9 days.  The weather is supposed to be fabulous practically year-round (low 80s in April) and it's still whale watching season in early April.  We plan on biking down a volcano, snorkeling, zip lining, and whale watching plus attending a luau!  We're very excited.

I would recommend booking plane tickets wherever you go online at Orbitz because they will refund you the $$$ if someone else pays less than you do!  I did our rental car through Priceline.

  • I was a destination bride and got married and honeymooned in St. Thomas USVI.  It was such an amazing place and we had such a great time.  The weather there is perfect in December, it is in the 80's and 90's everyday and it hardly ever rains, I think we only got rain one days out of our 12 day stay.  St. Thomas has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, so we did beach hopping and we went shopping.  The best part is you can go over to St. John it's just a 15 minute ferry ride over and it's so great over there as well.  Lots of hiking on the island if your into that.  You can also take a ferry over to the British Virgin Islands if you want to do that.  You don't need a passport to go to St. Thomas and St. John but you do need one if you want to go to the British Virgin Islands.

I think it just depends on what you want to do on your honeymoon.  If you want to relax and just hang out on the beaches then St. Thomas would be a great honeymoon.  But you can go to the other islands and do stuff as well.  The Virgin Islands are very relaxing and easygoing.

  • We spent a few days in Kansas City, and it was fantastic. We went to the Nelson Atkins art museum, which is amazing and free. We went ice skating one night. We went shopping. We spent a lot of time just wondering around the city, and we really enjoyed it.
    Please pass the ice cream.
  • We went to Washington DC for 5 days. We went to all the Smithsonians and National Monuments. We saw the National Christmas tree all lit up. It was cold but fun and very romantic!

  • Congrats on getting married!  This year is going to be full of planning and fun for you, enjoy it!

We went to Napa Valley for our honeymoon.  December is like their off season and they can get a lot of rain during that time.  The weather wasn't bad while we were there, chilly and a sprinkles on a couple of days but not bad.  It was like we had the place to ourselves though, it was awesome!  There was only two couples staying at our bed and breakfast and one night it was just us!  There was never a line at any of the wineries, we got a lot of personal attention during our tastings and I'm pretty sure we got more than normal. Dinner reservations were a breeze, but mostly not needed.  The vineyards were still beautiful even in the fog.  We also spent some time in San Francisco, which is one of my favorite places.  You'll have a wonderful time no matter where you go, because you'll be so excited to finally be married!

    Hope this helps!!

  • Congrats! December weddings are so gorgeous!

We went to Sandals Grande Antigua. It's actually the best time to travel there so it was our perfect Caribbean vacation in a nutshell. Weather was low 80s= tons of pool, beach time. The resort was magnificent...newly renovated (Mediterranean side). Let me know if this is the type of vacay you are looking at and I can give you more info.  GOOD LUCK!

  • We did Sandals Royal Bahamian and enjoyed it.  We liked that it was all-inclusive, so we knew up front what we'd be paying and didn't have to worry about bring extra money with us for food and drink.  To be honest, all we wanted to do after the wedding was relax, so Nassau was a pretty good place for us to go since we weren't big on doing any kind of activities.
  • We went to Secrets Maroma Beach in Riviera Cancun and it was so nice!  The flight there from Chicago was just a little over 3 hours, the place was beautiful, affordable, and they took good care of us.  My only regret was that we weren't there longer.  While we were there we took a few excursions; the first to check out the Mayan ruins at Tulum.  We did the express tour which included pick up and drop off, a tour guide and time to wander the area on our own before heading back.  It was the perfect amount of time to spend there.  The second thing we did was the most fun ever...we swam with the dolphins and the manatees at Dolphin Discovery.  We upgraded our package to give us the maximum time in the water with the dolphins and I've never seen my husband smiling so much ever!  The third thing we did was a sunset cruise with a lobster dinner on the beach afterward.  That was great, and very romantic.  The rest of the time we hung out on the property and had drinks on the beach, ate their fabulous food, and tried some of the activities they offer.  Good luck planning your HM and let us know where you are going!

  • We went to Key West...I'm not going to lie, it was COLD. We had two or three days at the end that were nice but we cut our visit short and are planning another romantic trip for the summertime... whatever you do, just plan well, do research and plan for contingencies. We had 40 degree weather in KW, and we were staying in a place that had no heating capabilities or hot water (it was broken). Thank god we were on the newlywed high or it would have been miserable.

  • We went to Thailand.  The weather was fantastic.  It was a bit muggy but we're from the south and humidity is nothing new to us.  We were there for a week and there was only a light sprinkling of rain one afternoon.  It was an amazing trip and Jan is a great time to visit.  We visited Bangkok and Chiang Mai but there are tons of great beaches to see too, we just didn't have time.  We didn't have any problems getting around but I did do a ton of research and I've traveled internationally many times before.  The food was delicious, the architecture is breathtaking and the people are very friendly and welcoming.  And Thai massages are super cheap!

The flights there and back weren't fun.  Do NOT fly Delta.  I thought it was guaranted these days that when you fly internationally there are tvs in the backs of the chairs.  Nope, Delta is still flying ancient planes on 13 hour trips that have 1 giant projector screen in the front...needless to say we couldn't see the tv at all and we were cramped in the middle two seats of the 4 across row.  Not a fun ride.  On the way there we flew Korean Air and it was amazing.  Great service, great food.  If we get around to that trip to Japan in the next few years we are definitely flying Korean Air.

  • I really don't know anything about Antigua, what kinds of activities do they have there? As much as id love to just lay on a beach my fiance needs activity! I like the all inclusive idea as well, I've heard complaints that they really water down your alcohol did you notice that. How was the price I know some islands are much more expensive than others.

  • They definitely do not water down your alcohol. The bartenders and alcohol are top shelf which is part of the initial price point. I'm also a hard person to pin down to sit by the beach day and night so my H and I planned very well to do two spa days and two tour days. The first tour was a full day Catarmaran tour that took you all around the island and through the Atlantic. We rec'd an authentic Antiguan meal for lunch, stopped at this quaint private island and snorkeled to see some of the most amazing colorful fish. The other tour we did was Shirley Heights which was a local place about 45 minutes from the hotel to view the "world's prettiest sunset". They had the largest steel drum band I have ever seen with 12 pieces! It was such a great time partying and hanging out with other tourists and the locals. They also had bbq available for purchase, but we were planning on eating at the resort.

We stayed for 9 days, and I believe the cheapest inclusive price point for two was around $3500. Be very careful though that you book in the Mediterreanean side of the hotel not the Caribean side. Of course with various categories, they go all the way up to 8 or 9K, We did the Butler service but ONLY because a sales rep called me a week before we left and offered me a tremendous deal. Originally we were just in a standard room which would have also been just fine.

I don't think you can be disappointed with this resort! Let me know if you need to know anything else. I have been to a ton of all-inclusives and the food at this one was hands down memorable and delish!

  • hi!

I was a destination bride too - we had our wedding and honeymoon in Hawaii.  It was stunning and it's a great place to honeymoon in December!!!  The weather was generally wonderful except for three days (including our wedding day!  oops!)

     Good luck this year!
