Poll about sports uniforms
Do you think it is important for athletic teams (mainly universities) have uniforms in the school's colors?
Or do you think it is totally fine if they wear uniforms in totally random colors, ones that, just by looking at the uniform, it isn't at all obvious which school they are from?

Re: Poll about sports uniforms
Absolutely. I think first and foremost these are STUDENT athletes and their uniforms need to reflect their university. Besides, who wants to cheer for the Hawkeyes when they're in blue and white instead of traditonal black and gold?
What brought this on, Madelyn? Did I miss an article somewhere?

No, no article. Just a conversation I was recently involved in.

Exactly the same as yours...they are student athletes...they are representing the school they are students and athletes at. I think it looks bad to wear uniforms that in no way represent your school.

I completely agree. Why would a school want to put their athletes in colors other than their main school colors, anyway? I just don't like that notion at all.
Yes. However...
Marquette plays with four colors: white (home), navy (away), baby blue (throwback) and gold ("big game color"). The primary colors are blue and gold and the baby blue is a color the university went to because that was the shade of blue utilized in the 70s, so I can see the rationale behind that.
Similarly, St. John's plays primarily in red (away) and white (home) and their colors are red and white. Recently, they've started wearing their "big game black" unis and they look decent too. Black, though not a recognized official color is often used as an accent color and it looks good too.
But when we're talking a totally off color like UCLA's black uniforms ::::GAG::::
I would much rather see teams (of all levels) stick to their own colors. I like seeing a white uniform and a dark uniform for home and away or whatever. However, I do think that for a special game or if you're honoring a charity or a person or a year, having a special uniform to commemorate that is neat. (I love it when NFL teams do pink in October.) I think the NFL has worn out the throw back uniform.
To me it just gets to a ridiculous point when you have teams like Oregon never wearing the same uniform twice (<-- obviously an exaggeration, but still...). As for recent events, the uniforms at the OSU/Michigan game last night were AWFUL. Drab grey and neon yellow. Not attractive at all. I'm old school.
