What is everyone's job?

I have realized that we reference our work sometimes in posts and I do not really know what most of you ladies do.  So what is everyone's job?  Do you like it?  If not, which job would you prefer?

Re: What is everyone's job?

  • I will go first.  I am a music teacher.  I am licensed K-12, but right now teach 1-4.  I absolutely love my job!  I cannot believe I get paid to sing, dance and play all day!  Of course I could do without some of the issues that come up with behavior or the paperwork, but other than that I love it!

  • I'm an Internal Wholesaler for a Third Party Money Manager.  I like it, not love it, but it pays the bills well and is different every day so I enjoy that.  I work with Independent Financial Advisors and solicit them to use our services for their clients.  I cover the SouthEast territoy of the US (TN, NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, FL) as well as Puerto Rico.  I love talking to Southerners, they remind me how to be pleasant.

  • Ugh...ignore this.  The full-length post is a few down the page...what is WRONG with TN?!?
  • I know we've done this before, but I can't always remember everything so it is a good refresher!

I teach high school science.  Currently I teach Physics, Physical Science (physics & chemistry for freshmen), and Forensic Science.  Next year I am teaching Astronomy for the first time.

I can't believe some days that I get paid to do what I do, it is fun a lot of the time.  I hate my commute, but teaching gigs as good as mine don't exist at all schools.

  • I own a candle company.  I work from home, making and selling scented candles, and soon, I will branch into bath and body.  Right now, I only sell through Etsy, but my dream is to have a storefront that I will turn into a full-out boutique/gift shop.  It's hard work, and money is very, very tight sometimes, but I wouldn't trade it for the world!  I worked my @$$ off to get into a position where I could work from home and be here when my kids need me.  You couldn't pay me enough to trade that back for working outside the home!
  • I'm a manager at a two screen movie theatre that shows independent movies (as in not first run, Harry Potter type films), that serves beer, wine & food. The theatres themselves have tables & couches. We show big events as well, such as the Super Bowl & the Oscars.

I've worked there for almost 9 years, and it's my baby. When I first started, we showed big movies and were busy all the time. However, in 2006 a 13-screen digital theatre opened down the street, and we couldn't show the same movies....things were tough. Finally, in July 2009 we changed over to independent and things got a lot better. Never to what it was, but people love the new concept.

Do I like it? It's fine...but I need a FT job. Not only that, DH works there...as the operator, so it's a little tricky, but we keep it professional at work.

Is it weird teaching at the school you graduated from?

  • I am a stay at home mom. I was working for Borders as a merchandiser for multiple stores but got laid off on my last day of maternity leave and it ended up being cheaper for me to stay home for now. I love being at home with her though and wouldnt trade it for the world, although I do miss adult interaction and sometimes hate the assumptions that people have of stay at home moms.

  • I work at a financial services company. I basically design the website that clients use when they log in to check their accounts. I've met a lot of great people that I would never have met, and never thought I would end up designing a financial services website when I was in school studying Information Technology. Every day is different which keeps it exciting.
  • I've worked part time at the Ivy Tech Follett's bookstore for a year and a half, basically selling textbooks to college students, along with school named merchandise (sweatshirts, etc). I have good days here, but they're few and far between, and I'd like to be out of there.

In August, I got hired on straight out of my internship at the West Lafayette Public Library. I LOVE it there - it's what my degree is for, and I feel like I was born to do it. I love everything about the job, coworkers included, and I'll cry when I have to leave. (We're looking for a full time job for Zach, and we know we more than likely won't stay here in Indiana, and definitely won't stay in Lafayette - can't shoot rockets off in cornfields.)

  • I am a 4th grade (all subjects) teacher in a Catholic school in an inner city.....tons of stress for very little pay.  Along with that, I also teach 3rd grade science and am the director of the afterschool program there.  I love teaching but I really need to find a job in public where I would make about $20,000 more a year.  It would help so much but there just aren't jobs out there

  • I am a staff accountant for a large plumbing manufacturer....We also own a small retail store in our town (bait and tackle)....I absolutely love my work....I just dont like being surrounded by idiots!! Its very frustrating to be the only one who gives a crap LOL...but i do love what I do...My company has been through a corporate take over and is on its 3rd president in a little over a year.... (the first one is probably going ot jail)...so its never boring...  Call me a dork but I love being an accountant LOL (thats why i cant get on much during the day)

  • I'm an operations manager for a large company.  I do enjoy my job - I just got a promotion in September, so it's still fresh and can be challenging, which is a must have in my career!

  • I'm a policy analyst for Elections Canada, which is the federal agency in Canada that ensures that elections are fair, nonpartisan and follow the law.  Unlike the US where elections are run by states, our national elections are run by one uniform law.

    Anyway, I love my job!

  • I'm a district manager for an international coffee company.  Well, I say it's a coffee company but we just removed "coffee" from our name since we've expanded to so many other things.  You know the company...I'm just not supposed to say it on the internet.  * plus $ plus s

  • I am a Police Services Generalist at one of our local police departments. That is basically a fancy name for records clerk. We are in charge of our front desk and the records bureau. I work in the records bureau, we read and code all police reports and code them according to state and national codes. I love it, and I don't think I have ever said that about a job. I love my coworkers and it is so interesting, never a dull moment and always a good laugh.

That sounds like kind of an awesome AWESOME job.

I am a Library Tech.  Not very exciting.  lol  I've been in the same library, in the same department, for 14 years now.  I was 20 years old when I started.  I really like the people I work with.

Not most days, a lot of my teachers have retired in between my graduation and my teaching there...There are days when it does seem odd.

  • Brooke, your job sounds soooo cool.  I wish we had a place like that where I lived.  I say you should expand the company and hire me lol.

I am a Loan & Document Collection Review Processor for Citi Mortgage.  Basically, by the time people get their home loans paid off, something has gone missing somewhere in the file, whether it's the final title policy, the HUD, mortgage paperwork, etc and before we can finally be 'done' with that loan and property, we have to have the complete package, so it's my job to research/find the missing documents in order to close out the loan.  It's a new job and really boring thus far, but I'm sure it'll get better as I get to know people and the process more in general.  Right now a paycheck is a paycheck, regardless of how boring it is, so I'm happy.

  • I'm currently a nanny for a 2 year old. I like the job fine but my hours got cut when she started Montessori school last Sept. and have a lot of free time on my hands but still get calls to take care of her during the day occasionally. I would love to find some way to utilize my degree which is in costume design and theatre but I haven't found anybody to pay me to do it with just my undergraduate and would have to move to get my masters (which I am not really sure I even want to get, since I can't find a job now). Maybe I will end up opening an Etsy shop to hopefully make some extra, keep creative, and utilize the free time I have when R is in school.

I'm still trying to work it all out Huh?

  • I'm in sales for a biotech - the company is based out of upstate New York, but I have a territory in Southern California, and also cover Arizona and Washington (state). I sell the research models we produce to biotechs, universities, and pharma companies.

I'm not sure what I want to be when I grow up - I don't think I want to stay in this kind of sales forever, but don't have any job that I can think of that I'd be passionate about. It also pays decently, so it's harder to want to make a huge change :)

  • I am the cashier manager of a big box department store. I don't really like my job. I want to work for a non profit- doing marketing and or pr for them. All the jobs I wanted when I graduated needed sales or management experience so that is why I'm doing what i'm doing. I hope someday in the near future I can be doing something with any of my degrees (advertising, public relations or marketing)

That sounds absolutely fascinating! I'm kind of jealous.

I work for a graduate school, directing professional development programs - primarily leadership/skill-based programs, but we do some policy programs, too.

  • I am a case design underwriter for the largest disability company in the country. I basically assess risk (think along cam polly) and create offers for employers to purchase for their employees. It's so weird because I never new what disability insurance was until I started working here, and now I really push the importance of having it. I LOVE the company I work for and I really like my job. My company gives me tons of opportunities to do volunteer work which is my true passion. I am out of the office at least 5 hours a month doing some sort of volunteer work. They do so much for our community. It's great!
  • I just took a job offer within the big box retailer I've worked for since August of 1999.

I am now an Optician. I fill prescriptions and dispense glasses and contacts. It is totally different from anything I have ever done.

People keep asking me how I like it... and all I tell them is that it's a lot if information. Truth is, I haven't been doing it long enough (less than three weeks) to feel confident (and competent!). I keep telling the ladies I work with, "It's sink-or-swim, and I'm keeping me head up!"

  • I'm a graphic designer for a small archival company in western, MA.

I enjoy up here, and the job is a change of pace from working retail for so long.

  • I am a stay at home Mom, but my son is in Pre-K so I have lots of free time.  I definitely can't complain.
