Umm, I gotta get out of here....

Today I was outside playing with the baby and I noticed a white fur ball laying lifeless in the yard.  I walked over and quickly discovered it was a stray cat that has been hanging around.  Clearly it was dead, but the it really didn't resemble a cat.  When my H got home I made him go out and really examine it.

He picked it up and it was the cat for sure.  But it had been skinned.  No guts, no bones, nothing.  Just fur.  And it was nothing that a dog or any animal had done.  It was def skinned with a knife.  Then we examined one of our old barns nearby and it appears that people have recently been in there.  Ugh.  Great.  We had some illegals.  And they ate the cat.  Effing awesome.

Why, oh why can't I live somewhere normal?  I know illegals pass through our property from time to time but I hate seeing the left over evidence.  Especially when they leave a dead cat behind.  Maybe I should stock our barns with spam?

Hmmm, maybe that explains why one of my dogs wouldn't stop barking last night.  I thought he was just going senile......

  • Oh gawd, that stinks!  Poor kitty :(  I know someone who entered illegally 15 years ago (he has permanent residency now) and his story is insane.  We are so blessed to have been born here, this just reminds me.  I guess that could be the bright side of it all?  I wish you could live here in FL with us too!!

Agreed. Everytime you share a story like this I'm reminded how different life is there than what I'm used to. I think I'd have a really hard time adjusting. The first thing I thought of when you said skinned was a sacrificial thing. It never crossed my mind that someone would eat a cat.

  • O.M.G.  That's awful.  I don't even know what to say to that.  I can't even imagine anyone doing that sort of thing, but I guess it happens.

  • Does your H not have a take home car?? One of the things that makes me feel 'safer' is the marked patrol car in the driveway. Of course that doesn't ALWAYS help, as evidenced by the hole-digging bandits, but it sure is better than nothing! Stay safe Kathy!

This exactly! Holy crap! I also find it ironic that your H works for the border patrol and you guys always have illegals coming through your property. Stick out tongue

Typically no, BP Agents leave the units at a secured location when the agents are not on duty.  Mostly because those units cost a *** ton of money!  I wish he did though.  He has brought his ride home a few times but when he does he has to have special permission and even then we lock in our barn out of sight.

We do have a big tin BP tin sign on the back of our barn, does that count?  LOL.  Usually the illegals don't want much to do with us and would rather go unnoticed.  But it doesn't make me feel any better knowing at any point in time we could have people camping out on our 18 acres.  Thank goodness we don't live in a super high traffic area, but we do get them coming through from time to time.   In the 5 years we have lived in this house, I have only come into contact with them about 5 times.  They were all harmless for the most part, but still scary.

Life is very, very different here.  It really feels like we live in a bubble and I am only reminded how backward things are when I leave South Texas.  I can't even begin to explain the different way of life here.  It's sad a lot of times.

One day I should take some pics of the houses on my street.  Some of the houses are crazy nice and HUGE and others look like shacks straight out of Mexico.  Like, you can hardly see a house behind all the garbage in their front yard.  There is a house down the street from me that has an old, rusted out school bus in their yard with a tree growing in the middle of it.  And it's not like we live in the bad part of town either.  Everything is like this.  There is no good part or no bad part.  You can't escape anything here.

The other day somebody dropped off a butchered cow on the side of the road.  And there are always old couches that people drop off.  It never fails, the county will come clean the junk up and the next day there will be a new mattress or a new load of old tires.  This time of year it's Christmas trees.  They litter the sides of the road.

Oh I could go on and on about this place.  You have to see it to believe it!

  • Wow...  Kathy, I hope you get to move back to Florida soon.  Your stories make me really glad that my parents moved us back from Texas when I was little.  At least you get to take frequent trips to get out of there!
  • Yikes!  That is a little disturbing...  Has your H been looking into any transfers lately?

Well, for the last year or so all the transfers have been put on hold :(  Maybe soon the Government will open up the program again, but my H's union guy hasn't heard of any news.

Although, he did hear that maybe they might start beefing up the Air and Marine unit.......and FL will really be the target of this growth.  So my H is planning on getting his Captins license (and possibly a boat) in the next few months in hopes he can be at the top of the hire list.  OMG, that would be great if we got Tampa!!  That would be a dream come true!  Ha.  But that is a long, long ways off if it ever happens :(
