Taxes- Filing as Married for the First Time

Hi Ladies,

I haven't posted on the nest before, but my knotties were so helpful during my planning, that I am sure I will find the same here!  I got married in April 2010.  We are filing together this year.  The one problem I have is that I haven't changed my name on my Social Security Card yet.  I just haven't had the opportunity to take a day and get to the SS Office...  So long story short, most of my W2s are in my married name, my license is is my married name, and there is a document here and there in my maiden name.

Do I just  have to suck it up and get to the SS Office before I file?

 Thanks for your help!

  • Some women never change their names after being married, so I don't think it matters for your tax filing status.

  • I didn't think you could change any of that stuff (license, W2's, etc) until you did your SS name change.  That was the first thing I did!  No advice, sorry!

That was my first thought too.

I don't think the names matter as long as the SS#'s are the same on all those things.

  • I haven't changed my name yet out of pure laziness... I just file with my maiden name, didn't have a problem this year or last year. I think you will be just fine.

I agree.  The first thing I was required to do (in state of CT) was change my name at the Social Security office.
