Vacation ideas: nestie from another board :)
Hi! I'm from the Seattle board and my H and I are thinking of taking a trip down to CA this summer - he has to be in LA for work, so we'll be starting there. I've really only been to San Francisco/bay area, Disneyland and San Diego. So a couple questions...
a) if we are going to be gone for a week, and only wanted to spend a day or so in LA, what should we do?
b) we'd like to spend the rest of the time outside the city, maybe near the beach, quiet/relaxing/romantic... where would you go?
TIA!
Re: Vacation ideas: nestie from another board :)
To answer your first question, it really depends what you like doing and what part of LA you're staying in. Keep in mind that LA is huge, and unless you want to spend a lot of time stuck in traffic, you may want to stay near the place you want to visit. Do you want to do the touristy thing and visit Hollywood? You could take a tour on one of those buses that takes you to see the sights and stars homes, and then have lunch somewhere in the area. Would you rather go shopping? You can go to the Grove where there are tons of shops and restaurants.
As for staying near the beach, I would recommend staying in Santa Monica. It's about 40 minutes from downtown LA, definitely by the beach, and there are tons of restaurants and shops in the area for when you want to venture out.
look around www.latourist.com ...
there are so many different kinds of things to do. Read over some of the ideas and think about what you would prefer. If you decide on 2 or 3 and want a recommendation from those, write again and I'll respond with my input!
As for me, I would try to drive Mulholland Drive - great views and obvious stopping points (maybe there is only one; can't remember) - great views of the city at sunset or at night.
If you go in the summer, I would go to Hollywood Bowl, a great LA experience.
You might want to go see the Disney Concert Hall, not necessarily even to go tp a concert, but the architecture is amazing (Frank Gehry).
A typical hike in LA (sometimes you see stars walking it) is Runyon Canyon. It also has great views of the city. I would say it's about 1 1/2 hour hike.
I love hiking, and my favorite is the Temescal Canyon hike - it has views of the city and the ocean.
Going to a taping of a TV show might be a fun LA experience.
For a romantic, out of town experience, I would recommend Point Dume in Malibu. It's a beautiful beach with a cliff you can hike up to; a lot of commercials and movies tape there; I think at least half the time I go there, I see a crew taping something there.
If you look up when the low tide is (occurs 2 times a day), and go near low tide, there are tidepools at the end of the hike where you can see amazing starfish and sea anemones.
There is a romantic restaurant at that beach called The Sunset - I've heard good things about it, and it has a great view of course.
A lot of people in LA like to hang out in cool hotel bars/lobbies - The Viceroy in Santa Monica, the Standard ... I would yelp ideas for LA. I love the Casa Del Mar hotel in Santa Monica because it has a great vibe in the soda area at night, and beautiful views at their restaurants during the day.
If you want an amazing restaurant experience and are willing to pay, I would recommend Jose Andres' The Bazaar restaurant at the SLS hotel. Pretty much the best reviewed restaurant in LA.
The Skybar is supposed to be a very posh typical "LA" type night life experience.
Have fun!
I don't go down to LA much (I'm between LA and Santa Barbara), but I do love going to the Hollywood Bowl!
If you're interested in the beach, relaxing, etc. I would recommend spending some time in the Santa Barbara area. Lots of great restaurants, beaches, hotel/spas, and you could take a drive just past Santa Barbara and check out some wineries in the Santa Ynez valley. We joined the wineries at Firestone and Bridlewood, but honestly, there are so many gorgeous places up there to visit. If you do make it up there, be sure to check out Solvang too - it's a cute little Danish town.
