Renting a room in a house?

I'm a DC Nestie, helping my mom rent an apartment in a private home in Bedford.  I've rented in a similar situation here in DC & it wouldn't be out of the norm to ask the owners to submit to a background or credit check.  Do you think a couple in Bedford would think it was an unreasonable request?  I don't want to tick them off, but I also don't want my mom to move into a house with complete strangers who could have a criminal past or be one month from losing the house.

Do you have any advice for her in reviewing the contract?

 Thanks!

Re: Renting a room in a house?

  • The other way around I wouldn't think anything of, meaning that if somebody was renting out a room in their house and asked for a background check of the person they were renting to, but I've never heard of somebody doing that the other way.

Your concerns for your mom make sense, though.  I have two questions that come to mind and they may or may not be helpful as I have never been in a situation like this.

Is she signing a lease agreement with the owners?  If so, the lease agreement document itself could offer her SOME protection for certain things if she were to have a problem, I would think.

Is she going through a real estate company?  If so, they could probably help you out with the backgroud check and knowing if it is common practice or not.

    GL!

  • I think Laura has great suggestions.  I am with her in that I have never heard of it where the owner has the background check on them, just the other way around.
