Our MN vehicle tabs are going to expire shortly after we arrive in AZ. So I'm thinking I will just register our vehicles when we get there. I should have about a week before I start working. I just tried to look on the ADOT website to see what I have to do to get my vehicle registered, but can someone give me the quick and dirty rundown?
We own one vehicle and are leasing the other. Does that make a difference?
What is the emissions test and how do I go about getting one?
Is there a physical location where you go to register your vehicle and get a new driver's license? Are they located throughout the metro area so I will be able to find one?
Any other info that might be helpful?
Re: Registering vehicle
The only thing I know for sure about vehicle reg. here is that it's insanely expensive compared to anywhere else I've been (including MN). So I would prepare to be paying a LOT more than you think you will need to.
I had a 2 year registration from Ohio when I came down, so I didn't change it over... I haven't changed my license yet either, but now I figured I might as well wait until April and get it in my married name instead of changing it twice.

So we kept our tags for a while but when we changed over to AZ, we registered our cars at one of those dmv places that is outsourced... So that way we did not have to go to the regular DMV. It was a godsend. I paid an extra 20$ but it was so worth it to me to not have to wait at the regular DMV for ever...
That being said, I changed my licence when we first got here and registered our vehicles it was almost 7 months later. If I were doing it all at once, I'd probably have done that at the DMV as I believe you can only do your licence there..
Registering your car & applying for license
For your license:
- old license which they will put a hole punch through
- SS card
Out of State vehicles:
- you have to take your car through a special line where they verify your VIN. I did mine at the MVD office. You HAVE TO DO THIS FIRST. For the car you own I think you are exempt.
Emission test :
- If your car is 2007 or newer you don't have to get the emissions test done.
Where were you with this info 4 years ago when I moved here! haha j/k
I was so excited coming here from Cali because my registration when down as did my car insurance! hopefully yours will be same...
Really??? Mine went way up! They base your registration on the value of your car which was more than I paid for mine. I was pissed!
That stinks, mine went waaay down, probably because of I was driving a Malibu haha those aren't to fancy and it was an 01'ahhhh how i so don't miss the pos! haha I think my insurance went down because I was living in Surprise and at that time it wasn't as built up so it was the majority older people
