Tulips

When do you plant tulip bulbs? I just bought my new home and am anxious to start gardening once the SNOW is gone. I'm just not sure when I should plant tulip bulbs.

Anyother tips for a first time gardener would be great TYIA

Re: Tulips

  • Tulip bulbs are typically planted in the fall along with daffodils and crocus.

  • Where are you located? Generally, bulbs are planted in the fall b/c they need a cooling period to bloom in the spring. You would need to wait until this fall to plant them. Also, if you are a beginner, you might think about starting with daffodils also? They are a bulb that will come back year after year (tulips are mostly one year and done), plus they are deer-proof if that is an issue in your area.
  • I live in Ontario, on small town called Ennismore.

I'm trying to get some garden ideas, we sit on 1acre of land so I have tons of room

  • It's so fun to get started!

As stated, fall is the best time to plant the spring-blooming bulbs.

I'd start looking though some perennial books or websites to get an idea of what you might like.

If you're wanting to put something into the ground sooner than later, you might be able to do peas and lettuce in early spring (plus, if you don't like how these look, you can rip them right out after harvest).  I don't know if many flowering plants like to be planted early.

Have fun!  We're planning on moving soon, and I'm so excited about starting with a new gardening plot.
