Thoughts?

One of the local elementary schools is having a Valentine's Day Dance.  We're talking kids that are in the 5th grade and below.  I find it just a little strange.  Am I alone in that thinking?

  • In Wylie?  I definitely find that odd if it's WISD because they are so conservative.

I do find it odd anyway though.  I mean, what do kids do at a dance at that age?  Our 6th graders have one at the end of the year but we teach them "appropriate" dances before and everyone just has a good time.  You know...YMCA, Conga line, Thriller (yes, Thriller).  There is cookies, cake, punch and lots of pictures and wall flowers :)

I have to admit, the kinder's might be kinda cute.  What's the point though?  Just for Valentine's?  I could see it better if it were a father/daughter, son/ mother thing....

  • Yep, in Wylie.  The sign out front just says Valentine's Dance, maybe it is something like a Father/Daughter and just doesn't say so on the sign.  I just don't see the point otherwise because I can't imagine there would be a lot of actual dancing going on with kids that young.  It's probably more for the parents to get a couple cute shots then the kids.

Your 6th dance seems more like a party/celebration then an actual dance which makes more sense.  To me, a dance is standing around drinking punch with friends and trying to get a dance or two with your latest crush.

  • I've always thought dances in middle school were weird, so I especially think elementary school dances are odd. I wouldn't keep my kid from going if everyone else is going, I'd just give it the side eye the whole time.

    Hmm

  • I thought junior high dances were pushing the envelope a little bit...but elementary school? No way. If my kid was going, I'd be there as a chaperone [or however you spell it], because I wanna know what kind of music and what kind of dancing would be going on with elementary kids.

  • I once face painted at a Catholic school dance that was all grammar school. There were a LOT of parent and teacher chaperones. Lots of takers for face painting, and they had food and tables set up. A lot of kids were just hanging out and eating, and I think they had some games or other activities. The "dancing" was basically girls running around in circles together.
