Re: Starter Camera
I love my Nikon D3000. It's the entry level DSLR for Nikon. I got it on sale, in a kit that comes with the camera body and lens, for $450. I'm not sure what you can get for $350, unless you find a great sale somewhere. A DSLR can definitely be done for under $500.
The D3000 does really well with the automatic focus and light settings. It does much better than other cameras I've used in low light. It also has a guide feature to help you decide what mode you want to set the camera in based on what type of photo you're taking (portraits, landscapes, portraits at night, etc etc).
Canon DSLRs are also very popular. Canon vs. Nikon is mostly a personal preference thing. I used to shoot on a Pentax SLR, and the Canons are just set up differently and felt weird to me to use. I found the Nikon worked better for me.
You aren't going to be able to find a new DSLR for $350, even the bottom of the barrel models cost more than that. You will have to look for a used older model. Check KEH, adorama, maybe even ebay (but be wary) to look for a used body. Stick with canon or nikon, there will be more of those probably available and more used lenses too (since I assume if your camera budget is that small you don't have a hefty lens budget).
You know buying a camera and 1 lens is just the start of the expenses with a DSLR if you really get into right? Are you sure you don't want a bridge or prosumer P&S that is a lot like a DSLR but you can't change the lenses?
I say either a Nikon D40 or D3000... and if not than a Canon Rebel.. definitely all really good Camera's!
Myself I've got the D40 and really enjoy it, it also takes great pictures!
