Re: PIP Day 12
Friedel Dicker Brandeis. She was an art teacher at Terezin, the Nazi ghetto camp. She secretly taught the children art. She encouraged them to express themselves through art, despite their environment.
She was an amazing artist and really inspirational. In the chaos, she held on to her passion and gave the children some sort of hope and life to hold on to.
I watched a documentary on Heroes of the Holocaust, and she is one that stayed with me. I was crying during the part where they discussed her and what happened to her and the children. Unbelievably sad.

Eleanor Roosevelt. I've been inspired by her every since I read the quote, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams," my freshman year in college. Everytime I feel like giving up on something, I think of that quote and I can usually push through and accomplish the task.
I'm about halfway through the biography MB bought me last year for Christmas. I was such a nerd when I got it, haha - I sat down on my couch with a highlighter and pencil and highlighted some of my favorite things and wrote notes in the margins.
Julia Child! She moved to France and took to the culture by jumping in head first. She had had a passion for food and everything she did. She was never afraid to try new things or go on adventures. Julia said life was to be savored and enjoyed, not rushed through. When everyone else around me is so worried about getting big important jobs and getting promoted, I need someone to remind me that it's not all about what you do for a living. It's about the sights, sounds and flavors around you. That's what I'm focusing on right now.
I second this!
Bertie Kingore. She's my teacher hero. She changed the face of gifted education and the way we view creativity. She stuck her neck out for a group of kids that are often the forgotten ones and helped many teachers see the value in gifted programs. She changed the way we look at evaluation, especially of creativity, and I use so much of her materials and ideas in my classroom. I met her at a national conference. She told stories about her students that would just melt your heart. She understands what it's really about, and that definitely inspires me.
Audrey Hepburn. I love everything about her. Her grace and willingness to help those in need are what I strive to do daily. Not to mention she's pure classic beauty.
