Anyone in the Southwest part of Oregon?

My DH is interviewing for a job in the Rogue Valley in a couple of weeks. We have an inside contact who says the job is basically his to refuse; he'd have to really screw up the interview not to get the offer. So, it seems pretty likely that we'll be moving out there in mid-March.

It seems like a pretty nice area, with a lot of outdoor activities, which we enjoy. The cost of living seems really low compared to where we are now - at least in terms of housing. We're seeing 3 or 4 bedroom single family homes for what we pay now for a tiny apartment that I describe as having 1.5 bedrooms (our 2nd bedroom is really small).

I'm definitely going to miss being in a big city, but it won't be the first time we've lived somewhere less urban.

Anyway, any thoughts or advice for a newbie to the state?

Re: Anyone in the Southwest part of Oregon?

  • If you live in Medford I would recomed having a four-wheel drive because you are between a couple passes and sometimes in the winter they will shut them down to regular cars.

It also nice for camping and exploring the mountains. It rains a lot in western Oregon but, is warmer down south with less over cast days. In that part of Oregon there are less allergies, unless there is a forest fire (smokey air makes me sick). forest fires are the only natural disaster you have to worry about.  It snows in the mountains but rarely to the valley floor. Which is nice and another reason to have a four wheel drive.

I grew up in the area so if you have more questions just ask. by the way I am not big on SUVs and trucks but, it will make your life easier there.

  • Thanks for the info! One of our cars is a 4WD so we are set there. I love the idea that there are fewer allergies - I really suffer out here on the east coast. I'm also glad that it doesn't snow much in the valley - these past two winters have about been the death of me! I love snow but it's a PITA! Which is why it would be nice to live in a place that doesn't get much directly but where we can go visit it. :-)

We'll know in a couple of weeks probably if we're moving out, so I'm sure I'll have more questions then!
