Tell me about your babies!

Today at clinic I got to see all kinds of children from very premature infants who were very sick and weighed only a few pounds =( to 14 year old kids... and everyone in-between! I'm interested in who on here has kids and did you have to experience any issues with their health when they were born or as they were growing up? How did you handle it? As a future PT, I'm honestly interested in the parent's point-of-view since today I got the therapy point of view!!

Re: Tell me about your babies!

  • My baby is an adorable, blue eyed 14lb cuddle bug. He has some bad habits though, like climbing on the counters, stealing my computer chair when I get up for more than 30 seconds and ambushing me in the middle of the night if I get up to go to the bathroom. Oh and he's 4-legged and furry. We don't have any "real" babies yet. Stick out tongue

  • My daughter Amelia is currently 9 months old and pictured below.  She was born 8 weeks early due to HELLP Syndrome and weighed in at 2lbs 15oz at birth.  This morning she weighed 17lbs 11oz so she is catching up quickly!

She was in the NICU for 3 weeks followed by a week in Level II care.  She came home at a gestational age of 36 weeks weighing 4lbs 6oz.  She overcame all of her initial health problems very quickly and has just started to slow down in growth.

Developmentally, she is still a little behind but that is to be expected for the first couple of years.  She is not yet crawling but we have different exercises/games that we do with her to help build her strength and get her caught up.  We give her extra tummy time to build arm strength, place toys out of reach to encourage her to roll, etc.  We also read to her daily which has helped keep her nearly on track with her speech.  DH and I work opposite shifts so we do not have to put her in daycare and we can work with her.

My nephew was also born at 32 weeks and because of his complications, he has been working with OTs and PTs for several months.  They have helped him so much and it is nice because my sister has been sharing some of their exercises with us to help Amelia.

  • Oh man, ours are sooooo not babies anymore. Heck, our grandkids aren't even babies at this point. (The youngest is currently 4 yrs old)

Between us we have six kids. I have two, ages 20 and 14. DH's four are 26, 20, 19 and 14.

My youngest had a laryngeal cyst he needed removed at age 5, but otherwise my kids have been pretty healthy.

DH's youngest three have been healthy, but his oldest was diagnosed with something called CVID (common variable immune deficiency) after a bout of interstitial pneumonia a few years back. Her body doesn't make it's own antibodies, so she started getting them via IV about two years ago. She may have had this at a younger age, as she's always had chest pain, but the diagnosis is recent.

So, basically, pretty healthy in their younger years and I'm probably no help.

  • Thank you all for your input! :)
