Ideas for a wine tasting party?

Dh and I would like to have a house warming party, but would ask our guest not to bring any gifts. Instead we were thinking of hosting a wine tasting contest and have the guest who wanted to particpate bring their favorite bottle of wine. We would reward the winner with some sort of gift card.

I need ideas, tips etc. on hosting this kind of party. I will make heavy appetizers such as spinach dip, stuffed muchrooms, cheese balls, bread, oil, deserts ....what else?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Re: Ideas for a wine tasting party?

  • You will want to add some proteins in there.  Devilled eggs, spiced nuts, baby ribs and some simple hard cheeses (Cheddar, Asiago etc).

It sounds odd but dark chocolate goes really well with a full bodied red wine.  Think truffles rather than brownies.

Fruit goes really well with your lighter white wines so a fruit tray might be a good idea (red grapes, honey dew melon, cantalope).

This sounds like fun...I may appropriate your idea.

  • I like the idea of a wine tasting and everyone bringing something different.  That would be popular in my circle.  I totally agree with pp on food.  I'd do a couple different cheese platters... with salami, crackers, grapes, nuts and dried fruit.  I'd also do a dip or two and then some heavier apps like your mushrooms you mentioned and something with chicken probably (like a skewer or a cabob) and something with beef, like a small roast beef and horseradish app or a meatball.

I have questions about the contest idea.  I've done wine tasting contests for showers or bachelorette parties I hosted, but in that case, I got the wines ahead of time, covered the labels and labeled them with a letter and then had specific questions for each one.  I'm wondering what you're going ask for the contest?  Or is it going to be which one people like the best?  I could see that working, but then maybe do categories like best red and best white?  Either way I'd have paper and pen available for everyone to write notes down about them or something.  And maybe even number/letter labels on hand to put near (or on or around) each bottle so everyone isn't writing down a long title each time.  I like to place the wines around the room (or two rooms) so people mingle.  And I'll space out food too.

Let us know how it goes!

  • I love the idea of wine tasting!  I agree w/ PP about putting a label on each wine to make it easier for people to vote.

if you scroll down about 1/2 way down the page there is a thread called "Wine & Cheese Party- entree ideas" which has a lot of great ideas in it for finger foods and snacks (too many to copy and paste)

This is exactly my idea-the one people like the best. Best red and best white. I was thinking about buying pretty totes to hide the actual bottle and just give them a number etc.?

I love your idea about placing them in various places in the room. Thanks so much for your ideas!
