AW: Registered for half marathon

Ok, the nest ate my post from earlier, so I'll try again:

As a reward to myself for losing 10% of my weight (through weight watchers) I registered for my first half marathon!  It's Melbourne Music Marathon on February 8th, 2009.  I'm super excited.  I'm just about done with the couch to 5K running program and will then move onto Hal Higdon's half marathon training.  Anyone ever done a long race?  Any tips?

Re: AW: Registered for half marathon

  • The most I ever ran was when I was in basic training and that was a LONG time ago, so I don't have any tips.

I just wanted to say congratulations on losing all that weight and good luck with your marathon!

  • Can you tell me more about the "couch to 5K" training program? I am looking into training for a 5k but i have never ran more than a mile - and it takes me a while!

  • I have REALLY enjoyed C25K.  It's a 9 week program that takes you from hardly being able to run at all to comfortable running a 5K (3.1 miles).  You can read more about it at c25k.com.  I do most of it on a treadmill.  I cannot say enough good things about it.  I could BARELY get through the 90 second jogging intervals on week 1, but now I can run 25 minutes with no problem.  The biggest suggestion I can give is that if you can't complete one of the runs it's because you're running too fast.  Let me know if you start it!  Oh, I also got fitted for running shoes and bought non-cotton socks and it made a HUGE difference.

i will definitely take a look at it - i will probably start soon b/c i really want to shed these 10lbs i gained post-wedding!

  • Definitely let us know how it goes!  :)  I've been doing WW at the same time, so I know that helped, but the weight was dropping like crazy when I was running.  I got sick 3 weeks ago and couldn't run and the weight loss REALLY slowed down.  Good luck!

  • Wow that C25K thing sounds really cool. I'm awful at sticking to any exercise routine, so I doubt I'd actually stick with it, but it definitely makes running sound more do-able than it's ever sounded before.
  • The couch to 5k program really helped me. I am running my first 5k in November here in Tavares where I live. People keep telling me it's different running outside than on a treadmill. I mapped out 3.1 miles around my neighborhood and am going to attempt running outside on Saturday! Good luck with the 1/2 marathon training:) Congratulations on losing 10%!!!
  • Wow congrats to everyone who has trained for marathons. That's amazing!! :-)

Congrats on loosing 10% also. That rocks!!! :-)

Wow this is quite the motivational post!

  • I did a half a few years ago and I am currently training for another one in December, the OUC half. The best advice I can give is stick to your training schedule and make your goal distance not time. If you are doing most of your runs on a treadmill I suggest either changing the incline through out your run or run a little farther, 0.25-0.50 mile more than you are supposed to. Running outside is much different than running on a treadmill, now that the weather is cooler get outside for some runs if possible. It's definately a great goal and so rewarding. You will be so surprised what your body can do and it's very inspiring when you run any race because you see people of all fitness levels out there. 5k's are great practice runs in prep. for the big one. You can do it! I am sure you will do great.
  • Congrats on registering!!  I was going to run the 1/2, but I'm doing the Gate River Run in Jacksonville instead.

Hal Higdon is by far the best program!!  GL!!

  • Congrats, RedHead! I'm also training for a half marathon right now, the OUC in early Dec. I'm training with a group, but I'm more than happy to send you my training calendar. You could modify it for your race date. Let me know if you'd like it.
