Hi Everyone! I'm new here and my husband and I are moving to New Orleans in a couple of months for his job. We've never been to New Orleans before and I'm looking for suggestions on where to live...any ideas? Thanks!
Re: Moving to NOLA
I also completely agree with MBR. If I were single or didn't plan on having kids, we would live uptown. That's where I work, some of the areas are really nice! Also the area right around City Park looks nice! But b/c we are looking to have kids, we live on the northshore. I'm partial to the Covington/Mandeville side of the northshore...opposed to Slidell. But you do have to make the commute if you work in the city. But I do it and it's not bad at all.
And welcome!
I have seen some nice areas in Kenner, you just have to find the right neighborhoods
DH's aunt lives on Rebecca Blvd, and it's very nice.
Like everyone else has said- Uptown is nice without kids. If you have kids and live in the city, prepare to put them in private schools. The public schools in Orleans Parish are not good. I grew up in Metairie and there are definitely nice areas (especially "Old Metairie"). I would avoid Kenner although it is cheaper if you are looking to buy, but there isn't really anything out there and there are a lot of not so great areas.
I would also be careful with "Mid-City". Some parts are nice, but I've had 2 friends get held up at gunpoint (separate instances) in busy areas.
Lakeview is very nice. It flooded during Katrina, so everything is new and it has always been a more family friendly, upscale area of the city without the prices of Uptown.
I also vote for the Northshore. The public schools in St. Tammany Parish are the best in the state. The home construction is pretty new and you get more for your money.
Sorry so long! Let us know if you have any questions!! You are going to LOVE the city!!!
We don't have children and imagined for the longest time we'd live in Uptown after we moved down here from Baton Rouge. We decided the north shore was more convenient for us and we really like it here.
We live in Mandeville where MH has to take the Causeway to work (a 20-something mile bridge over the lake). There's a toll going into the city but you can get a pass that will take $1 off.
We lived in Slidell for 8 months, where my husband grew up, and I wasn't a fan. Maybe it's cause I was coming from Baton Rouge but Slidell was just kind of eh for me. The good thing is you don't have to take the Causeway to NO if you live there, you can take the twin-span which is shorter (5 miles) and there's no toll.
Not sure on any other parts of the city though since I'm not a native Louisianaian/New Orleanian
Best of luck with your move! Hope to see you around the board!
I live Uptown and absolutely love it! We just bought out first home in the Broadmoor area but also looked at some other areas of uptown.
Are you looking to just rent for now?
