So, I bit the bullet and bought the system about three weeks ago. I can honestly say that I have not have any major pimples since I started using it! And I've been through PMS symptoms and that is normally when they really come out.
But, I wouldn't say that my skin looks magically perfect like it does in the commercials. I used to use netrogena and that was Salicylic acid whereas the ProActiv uses Benzoyl peroxide. The Benzoyl peroxide is a lot harsher on my skin so it makes it red. Under my cheek area and chin, it really reacted to it and the skin flaked and everything. So, I've been doing the whole treatment at night and avoiding under my cheek area during the day and it seems to help with the flaking but I think my skin is a little pinker than normal. I haven't really decided if that is normal for me or if it is because of the treatments because I never paid attention before. I probably shouldn't have continued with the treatments after the flaking but I didn't want to give up either because of the magical results they show during the commercials.
My skin is really oily and that hasn't really changed but I got the package that included something to help with that. Haven't tried that part yet.
I do really like having a morning and nightly skin regimen though. It's kind of fun so I look forward to it!
Thanks for the advice on this! Just wanted to let you all know it didn't go to waste!
Re: ProActiv Followup
I recently started using it too (YAY adult acne!) and the first 2 weeks I had no new breakouts, but this week has been awful again. Though some of that is probably from PMS. I too had the bad flaking, and the green tea moisturizer didn't do jack for it. I've been using my Aveeno face moisturizer on my cheeks where it is most dry, and the green tea stuff on my forehead where I have the oil problem.
I figured I will give it a few more weeks before I truly decide if it's for me, but I was hoping for better results compared to people I have talked to.
If this doesnt work my next step will be the Clinique counter, my sister swears by their skin care system. I just hate spending so much money to have decent skin!
Clinique is awesome but it is $$. I stopped using it because of the price and it stopped working.
goodgollie - my sister and one of her friends said the exact same thing - that it was like their skin got used to Proactiv after a while, and it stopped working.
Tigers, remind me again what is in the regimen. The cleanser, the topical treatment and the mask are the only things I can remember. Is there a toner? You might be overdoing it on the topical treatment (not sure if you're using it everywhere or just in certain spots). I know that would dry my skin out if I was using it in places where it wasn't needed. Just trying to think of ideas for you to help.
My sister's dermatologist said that Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizer is some of the worst stuff on the market as far as moisturizers go (and being bad for breakout prone skin). Take it for what it's worth, since everyone has a different opinion. I haven't used it since hearing that though. MH uses it with no issues.
I know that when my skin starts to get a little flakey I just go to using the medicated cleanser at night and just using a gentle soap in the morning.
Also, I know a PP said that the Green Tea Moisturizer didn't work for her, but I LOVE the stuff. It has been awesome for reducing redness, keeping my skin moist but not oily and helps my makeup look better.
I agree that after a while, I felt like it wasn't really working. This was after atleast a year of use though. I discontinued it for a few months and my skin went to crap and so I ordered it again, and just like that, no more breakouts!
