baby food making question

Hi,
I was thinking of having them try avocados next week.  Question is can you puree and freeze avocado or what is the best way to store it?

Re: baby food making question

  • i always did my avocados fresh...they are like apples in that they will brown if left out to the air...so I'd usually mush 1/2 of one and use the other half in a salad or make guac with it so I didn't waste it.  I always had issues with browning if i left it...even if I put it in my babyfood making "jars" in the fridge.
  • Since it's so easy to mash, my thought would be to freeze it in slices and then take them out, defrost and mash as needed.  I have some frozen slices in my freezer and they didn't brown, although I haven't defrosted them yet.  I did cut the avocado in half and put half sliced in the freezer and the other half in a plastic bag in the fridge - it stored well.  I just sliced off the brown part when I gave DD more - which BTW I didn't puree - I just diced up, although she might be older than your LO...she never liked them pureed though and always wanted to feed herself. :)

  • I never froze avocado, but I did mix in into foods and freeze that. You can actually still eat it when it's brown, it just doesn't look too appealing.
