Green Your Super Bowl Party

Sunday's the Super Bowl, an American institution during which living-room celebrations can reach the same fever pitch as the stadium itself. Are you hosting a party? This week's tips are about how to make it greener.

Tip #1: Serve green beer.

Beer's a basic staple for football fans, so why not pick a bottle made with the environment in mind? There are many responsible brewers that make delicious ales from organic ingredients, get their energy from solar power, or use spent grain to feed livestock. If you're into buying locally, find and support a nearby craft brewer. Cheers!

Tip #2: Tackle a vegetarian menu

Wisconsin loves its bratwursts, so this one might be hard for Packers fans to swallow: This year, consider replacing traditional processed meats on your backyard barbecue with black-bean burgers, vegetarian chili, or another meat-free entr?e. Apart from their low carbon footprint, vegetarian meals are often delicious, healthy, and inexpensive, and there's a wealth of online resources to help you find a local farmers? market or plan a vegetarian Super Bowl menu.

Tip #3: Go Paperless

Don?t end up with trash bags the size of a Steelers defensive lineman. You can reduce waste by going paperless: send electronic invitations (try Pingg, which stocks football-specific designs, or Facebook) and use your own ceramic plates, metal flatware, glass cups, and cloth napkins. Don?t want to spoil your good china? Find used ? and free ? dinner sets via Freecycle. And yes, in the long run, washing dishes is greener than chucking paper plates (here's how to save water while you do that).

Tip #4: Throw a party!

The big game's always more fun to watch with a crowd, so tell your friends and neighbors (regardless of who they?re rooting for) to come to your place this Sunday. You'll save energy by sharing your TV, even while building community. Encourage your guests to walk, carpool, bike, or take public transit ? and to unplug vampire energy sources when they leave their own homes.
