How fast can you read?

I've been trying to pick back up on my 'old' habit of reading every night.  (took like 2 years 'off', damn grad school making me crazy)

I've been giving myself some little reading goals each week, which then made me realize how "crazy" reading 111 books in a year is!!  I'd be pushing it trying for 50 :P

So it made me curious, how fast can you read... or rather, how much do you read a day?

The book I'm currently reading is really tiny font, and I'm maxing out at about 40 pages a night, in about 2 hours or so.

Re: How fast can you read?

  • For me it very much depends on how the book was written.  It takes me a lot longer to read something like The Scarlet Letter than it does to read Harry Potter.  I would say on average maybe 1-2 pages in a minute but it is so book dependent I don't know if I can really say an average.

  • I can read any one of the Harry Potter or Twilight novels in about 4-5 hours depending on interruptions. (I'm just using those for example since they're popular.)

I read Water for Elephants in 4 hours and the last three I read (Sleeping Beauty Trilogy) each took about  2 hours.

ETA: I did major in English Lit so it was either read fast or fail lol.

  • I'm a pretty slow reader and always have been.  Or rather, I can read faster, but my brain doesn't absorb the info if I do... if that makes sense.  I have to make myself read slower so that I can "get" everything I'm reading.  I'd say on my average break at work, I can get through about a page a minute if I am the only one in the employee lounge and don't have any distractions.

  • I'd say about a page and a half a minute. if I'm at work reading ( also know as pretending to work) id say a page a minute seeing i have to put it down to help customers as they come in and then when they leave I have to back track a few lines to remember where I was in my mental picture of what was going on.

  • I read pretty fast. I average about 3-4 books a week, but it can be dependent of the book. Ana just sent me Their Eyes Were Watching God and I have found that I can only read a little bit at night and I'm reading a lot slower trying to decipher the colloquial dialogue (it's very Faulkner-esque) and even though I grew up in the South, it takes me a while to read it for comprehension.

  • I'm similar to Tisha.  I can read/skim fast but unless I go slow my brain doesn't comprehend everything.

I have no idea how many pages per minute I read.  But I just started Little Bee (actually for my first local TN book club!) and I've been reading about 30minutes everyday for 3 days and am 30% through the book.  But I'm e-reading so I have no idea what the book size is like!

    Sorry!

  • I go through phases.  I'll have a week or two where I read non stop and then I wont pick up a book for a month.  I think I average about a page a minute.

  • I don't know about pages per minute (but I will have to time myself now!), but it depends on the book. If it is a fiction book I enjoy- like Kim Harrison's witch series- I can read a 350 page book in 3 days. If it is non-fiction, I can only read so much a day (makes me fall asleep) and it will take me a couple weeks.
