if you use vinegar as fabric softner.....

how much are you using? i use Method laundry detergent (four pumps to a load) and am trying to steer away from buying fabric softner. i have been putting vinegar in the wash as i have seen other door but might be using too much as some thing have a vinegar smell to them....

not sure how much i am using or is there is a way to get the clothes to smell better.

Re: if you use vinegar as fabric softner.....

  • I don't always use it, but when i do, i just fill the fabric softener compartment (probably 1/4 c).  Never noticed a smell, and we use unscented detergent.  You could probably use essential oils if you're worried about it.

  • I sometimes notice a vinegar odor when I first pull things out of the washer, but it seems to fade quickly.  No one has told me I smell like a salad or anything.  I also don't expect my clothes to smell "good" after I clean them, the way they would smell with chemical fragrances.  I just want them to be clean and de-odorized.

My washing machine has a reservoir for fabric softener so I dump my vinegar to the max fill line, which I'm guessing is around 1/4 cup.

My other tip for subbing vinegar is to hang dry any fabrics with a high synethetic content, like fleece and nylon.  This will greatly minimize static problems.

  • I use it in almost every load. My fabric softener dispenser holds about 1/2 c and I usually fill it. I've never noticed a vinegar smell and I also use unscented detergent.

  • I have a Downy Ball and I just fill it with vinegar to the "fill line"
  • I use about 1/4 to 1/3 cup. I have a front loader. I make my own detergent made with my own homemade unscented soap. I use dryer balls in the dryer. I've never noticed a vinegar smell.

    Ditto.  I think it's 1/4C.

  • Since it is winter I fill the fabric softener dispenser to max. In the summer I will probably cut back to the min line.
  • I use probably arounf 1/4 a cup. My clothes smell a little vingegary untilthey dry. The smell is gone when they are dry. (the smell goes away in both dryer dried clothes and hang dried clothes.)
  • does anyone have trouble with laundry coming out with lots of static?  I haven't gotten those dryer balls, but heard tennis balls might work- any thoughts?
