What to bring to cocktail party?

We moved a few months ago and we've been invited to a cocktail party at our neighbors.  We don't know them and I have no idea what to bring.  The only time we met them they brought us a bottle of wine so I don't know if I should bring a bottle of wine to their party.  Any ideas? TIA

Re: What to bring to cocktail party?

  • I would stick with wine or nice chocolates.  For people I know better, I have given williams-sonoma dishtowels which always seem to be a hit.

  • Hostess gifts aren't required and they aren't expecting anything.  If you'd like to get them something, bring a box of nice chocolates or maybe a house plant if you've noticed her outside beds look nice.  Wine's not my favorite gift bc it's so unoriginal, but you could make it more meaningful if there's a local winery there in your new town or where you came from.  Also, if there's a local product the area's known for (nuts, baked goods), you could do that as well.
  • you can offer to bring an appetizer or dessert...

other than that maybe some cute cocktail napkins, I've seen them with funny sayings...instead of wine you could bring a flavored vodka

  • Have you been asked to bring something to the party or are you talking hostess gift?

I always bring a bottle of wine to a party no matter what. I also usually bring along another small hostess gift if it's a really good friend or I know the party was a lot of work. I like to find small antique silver spoons with monograms cheap and give those as gifts.

  • I agree with the other posters, I don't think it's necessary for you to bring anything but a bottle of wine would definitely be a nice gesture...maybe you could add on a nice wine stopper.
