Sweet Tea

Do any of y'all have a yummy and easy recipe for sweet tea?  Please share!  :)

Re: Sweet Tea

  • This is very easy and always makes really sweet iced tea ( lots of real sugar!)  I make this every 3 or 4 days.  It's so good!

    You need:

    • Box of Luzianne Iced Tea bags
    • Bag of sugar
    • Water

Boil 8 cups of water until the water reaches a roiling boil.  Dump water in pitcher.  Lower 3 Luzianne Iced Tea bags into the water.  Set a timer for 4 minutes so the tea can steep.  Remove and throw away bags.  Measure 2 cups of sugar (it looks like a lot, but you really need it because tea is so bitter.)  Dump sugar in and stir well.  Chill at least 2 hours.  If you want to drink it right then, make sure you use a lot of ice.  It is very hot.  Sometimes I add another cup or so of ice cubes into the pitcher, which means you'll need some extra sugar.  I usually put in at least another tablespoon in that case.

Add lemon if you want, but lately I've been drinking it with nothing added to it.  I've also found the same recipe works well with flavored iced teas such as raspberry.  Raspberry Lipton Iced Tea bags are the only Lipton bags I'll use.  For regular sweet tea, southern style, you gotta go with Luzianne.  Better than Mickey D's!

  • I make it the way that I learned from my mom - it's very simple.

You'll need family sized tea bags (DH thinks Luzianne is the best... I don't have a preference,) sugar, water, a pan, a long mixing spoon, and a pitcher.

Tea bags - you want 1 family sized bag per quart of water, and 1/2 cup sugar per tea bag.

So, for instance, if you are going to make a gallon of tea:

This may sound lazy, but I don't pre-boil the water before steeping the tea and so on - I just put 4 tea bags in a pan of cold water and bring it to a boil on the stove, then I turn the burner off or down low and let it steep.  (I've never timed how long I steep it - I guess I usually make tea while I'm cooking, so I'll put it on first and let it set while I'm finishing the meal prep) - I'd say at least 5 minutes.

Then - this is the crucial part - put your sugar in your pitcher before you put anything else in. I've found that if I add the sugar later, it doesn't always dissolve the way you'd like for it to.  I'm rambling - back to the point:

Put 2 cups of sugar in the pitcher, then pour the tea into your pitcher and stir it up, dissolving as much of the sugar as you can before adding water.

You can put the pitcher under a faucet and pipe the water in, or, if you like a stronger tea, you can keep your tea bags in the pan and fill it up with a few more cups of water and skim it into your pitcher.  I usually do this but it's not a necessary step.

Then pour yourself a glass - with lots of ice - or let it cool in the refrigerator until you're ready for serving :)
