Yoga!

Hey ladies, just wondering where you recommend going to yoga. I went to CorePower in SE and did their Hot Power Fusion class and LOVED it. Never tried yoga before that- and now I feel hooked! I am not familiar with any studios that offer regular and heated classes, but i would like to try other studios and instructors. I am on the West side, but I am willing to travel for a good experience!! thanks!

Re: Yoga!

  • I go to Cell Rejuvenation Center in John's Landing.  They have Bikram (hot) yoga and the instructors are fabulous.

They also have a vegan food and juice bar with all kinds of yummy things to have after a workout.

They have a deal for 1 month of unlimited Bikram for new members  for $29.

  • Long-time yogi here and lover of the hot stuff.

Corepower is a great introduction but I have a few issues with it: I think the skill of the instructors varies greatly; I'm more traditional in the sense that I don't like that I hear Jack Johnson and the like during my practice and at times it feels like a gym workout versus a yoga practice. It certainly is more focused on the physical aspects of yoga versus the combination of physical and mental. And the mental component of yoga is a big reason for why I do it. All of that being said, I would prefer it over Bikram.

Bikram yoga...the same 26 postures in the same order every time with no flow between them and the room always at a cool 105 degrees. I like vinyasa style yoga (flow between poses) and so Bikram really doesn't do it for me in this sense. Aside from that, I think Bikram (the man) is a bit of a schmuck (i.e. tried to copyright his 26 postures even though they are 1000s of years old) and I don't love how hard the instructors push you to go further...often times too far to the extent you injure yourself. Again, less of a mental component.

My favorite happy medium in town is Yoga Union in SE. Combines the physical and mental nicely, hot and locally owned. The classes can be packed but I've found it to be the best combo so far. All of the above being said, Bikram studios do the 30 days unlimited for $30 deal, which is pretty hard to beat. And part of the fun of yoga is exploring all of the different options out there. I have friends who wouldn't do anything but Bikram. Good luck and have fun!

  • Hey ladies- thanks for the feedback. I have to say that I am rather fond of the hot/heated yoga. It's so relaxing to me and soothing with the heat- especially this time of the year!

I might go check out Yoga Union! Thanks for the information!
