Anyone have a good therapist in Albany area?

A very good friend of mine from college was killed this summer in an ATV accident. It has been almost 7 months and I am still having a hard time dealing with his death. After a lot of consideration I think grief counseling would really benefit me as it is starting to take a toll on my marriage.

Honestly we probably would benefit more from couple's therapy but that is not an option. DH will not go to therapy with me. So I will help myself and go on my own I guess.

I work in the mental health field so I actually know quite a few therapists I just wouldnt feel comfortable seeing them on a personal level because it would be a conflict of interest professionally.

Also I realize that this is kinda a personal matter so if you have a suggestion but dont want to air it publicly you can PM me.

I appreciate any help TIA!

Re: Anyone have a good therapist in Albany area?

  • I'm sorry to hear about your friend.  I don't have any recommendations because I have not been to a therapist, but I have dealt with a lot of grief issues over the past couple years (lost my 3 closest family members in a short period of time) - I didn't want to spend the money on therapy, so I considered some grief counseling support groups.  Not sure if that would be any help to you, but that is another option, made me think of it since you said your DH wouldn't attend and because you know a lot of therapists already.  I never had the time to actually go to any (so you'd have to look them up), but the thought of being able to talk to people going through same/similar experiences was a big draw, since most of my friends could not relate.  Good luck.
  • I have two actually.  I currently see Nancy Gardner on Lark Street.  She's an MFA, CSW and a certified pyschotherapist.  She can't prescribe anything though.  I forget which kinds of therapists can.  Anyway I talk to her about my anxiety but she also does all sorts of therapy, even art therapy I'm told.  Compared to other therapists I've been to, she's very liberal.  It's not the uptight environment some may fear.  I worry that I like her too much though so I don't want to dissapoint her, but that's besides the point.  I don't think she has a web site but her phone number is 518-465-9700.

I used to go to Pinncale Behavioral Health.  They are more of cognitive behavioral therapy but they were great too.  My insurance just stopped covering them when I was school which was annoying. They're more of a doctor's office type environment but the therapy to me seemed pretty similar.

Good luck and I hope you get some help soon.
