Serta Perfect Sleeper... need recs!

DH and I are mattress shopping.  We went to the Mattress Warehouse near us yesterday and we really loved the Serta Perfect Sleeper, the Willow Pond model (king size).  It is a pillow top mattress with the Innerspring individual coiling.  For the President's Day sale they are offering the nearly $3k mattress for $1500, which is a pretty awesome deal.  We wanted to do a little homework on it though before purchasing.

We have read some reviews on Perfect Sleepers and reviews seems pretty evenly mixed... people either love them or hate them.  All complaints involved the mattress sinking in where people slept in them.  I asked the guy in the store about the sinking before we even started looking at the pillow tops, because I had heard of this happening.  He said that if you don't put the proper mattress protector on, that will happen... but all mattress stores sell nice mattress protectors, which we already knew we'd be investing in.

Just curious if anyone has/had a Serta Perfect Sleeper, or any other type of pillow top for that matter.  Would you recommend it?  Anyone bought from Mattress Warehouse?  Would you recommend there?  My parents always buy from Mattress Warehouse, but my grandparents recommend Sleepy's.  We live in MD but I'm assuming these are national chains...  FWIW, we did not like the feel of a Tempurpedic in comparison to a pillow top.

Just trying to do the best homework we can... Any input much appreciated!

I don't know anything about that type of mattress (we have a memory foam one from Bob's Discount Furniture---like a cheaper tempurpedic type). But i do know that that saleman has no idea what he's talking about. Mattress protectors will protect it from spills and things, but not from sinking. Sinking would be due to springs being worn down, which a cloth/plastic protector wouldn't do anything for. Unless they have some weird different contraption that they are calling a "mattress protector"...which i highly doubt.

Try to find a place that will give you a warranty that includes replacement if something like sinking springs happens. With the Bob's stuff we have, so long as we use their "mattress protector" to prevent spills and such, we have a like 18 yr replacement warranty or something. it rocks.

  • Well, what he said about the sinking is it's due to when you sweat at night when you sleep and the loss of body fluid.  He said if you weigh yourself at night vs. the next morning you will lose a little bit of water weight (which is definitely true).  What he said is that the mattress protector protects the mattress from absorbing the body fluid you lose over night... the body fluid that induces sinking.

Serta offers a 10-year warranty on their mattresses, and the salesman said that Serta and Simmons in his opinion are the most receptive when their clients have a problem with their mattresses, so that made me feel good.  He said this mattress is made to last bout 15 years while other Serta's and Simmons' typically only last 10 years.  So I guess the only bad thing is that the mattress would supposedly last longer than the warranty?

oh...i guess i was misinformed about what the sinking meant.......becaues ew gross sweat sinking!!! that's absolutely repulsive to think about....though it does make some sense lol

other than that, the warranty sounds very decent and pillow top sounds super comfy.
