I'm working on train tickets for our trip from Paris to Wurzburg at the beginning of May, and I wanted to get your opinion on our options:

1)  Take a 3:30 train from Paris to Stuttgart, have an hour and a half stop, hopefully grab dinner somewhere, and then take a train to Stuttgart to Wurzburg that gets in about 10:30.  This is the cheapest option.

2)  Take a 5:00 train from Paris to Frankfurt with a half hour stop.  Take a train from Frankfurt to Wurzburg that gets in about 11:30.  This is the most expensive option by far.

3)  Take a 5:30 train from Paris to Karlsruhe have a 35 stop.  Take a train from Karlsruhe to Manheim with a 7 minute transfer to catch a train to Frankfurt, then have a 10 minute transfer in Frankfurt to catch the train to Wurzburg, which gets in at 11:30.

Right now I'm leaning towards option 1, but I'm hoping for some advice.  Are there decent places in Stuttgart to grab dinner fairly quickly (we're totally fine with street food)?  Is there anything we should absolutely see there in our hour and a half?  Thanks!

  • I would definitely go with option 1.  Not only is Stuttgart a wonderful city, but I think the Hauptbahnhof/train station is located fairly close to the Schlossplatz (Palace Square)  and is near the pedestrian zone which has some nice shopping.  For a quick stop I would hit the Schlossplatz or the Schossgarten (never actually been there).  I'm pretty sure there are more than a few places to grab a quick bite to eat in that area .  Also, there are going to be several places in the station if you are running behind and can't leave the station.  Even if you are trying to eat healthy and fresh foods you will be able to find some good places right in the station.  That is one of the great things about Europe, even the gas stations have incredible food.

I have only been to Stuttgart once and I loved it, but I never actually saw the train station.  So I am only going off of the google map, but I think you would be better off doing Stuttgart.

Good luck and let me know if you need anything else!

  • Thanks!  I figured this was the best option, but I'm glad you were able to provide some insight on the city.  It looks like the train station has lockers, so B and I can ditch our bags while we walk around.  Too bad you don't live closer to where we're going to be.  An international nestie GTG would be awesome.

  • I know! Mannheim is right down the road but not worth it for the crazy train itinerary that was the other option.  You will have to remind me when you are coming and what your schedule is.  Occasionally Brandon has work in that area or we get time off and we could totally link up.  It would be awesome to actually meet up with someone, I am always so jealous of the GTGs!

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do what I can to help out!
