Anyone done a kitchen reno?

We are planning to redo our kitchen (remove walls, new floors, cabinets, applicances, countertops, etc.).  Has anyone done this?  We need someone to come in and design the new space for us, since our current layout stinks!  I know Home Depot can do the design but we've had a few bad experiences with them with other projects in our house.  Does anyone have advice or recommendations or references for this kinda thing?  TIA!

Re: Anyone done a kitchen reno?

  • we did but we used home depot for the design...  We used Mark and the home depot on rt. 2

  • I totally forgot to get back to you about this Julie!  Sorry!  I'll get you that phone number today.
  • We did ours last year.  I went to HD and Lowes.  Went with Lowes (Seekonk) - better prices and the designer really knew what he was doing.  I believe his name was Jack.  He was very helpful in saving money by not adding in some expensive extras, etc.  The woman we had at HD kept trying to add on extras that we didn't really need, and their price came in about 5K over Lowes.

Cabinets and countertops (granite) were from Lowes.  Flooring and backsplash (tile) were from HD.  Applicances were from Wickford appliance (they had an great black friday deal).

    Good luck!

  • We redid our kitchen a year ago used Art of the Kitchen on Hope Street in Providence. We LOVED them. We had been burned so many times trying to get a bargain- which would always turn out to be far from a bargain, given the time, energy, and money we had to spend to make things right. Kathy and her team were so professional, neat, timely, and considerate. We would recommend them a hundred times!

  • Thanks -- very helpful!  I will check out Lowes in Seekonk--we're in Barrington, and I will check out Art of the Kitchen!  Thanks.  And Angela--no worries!  We are slow moving anyways...
  • We redid our kitchen, but it wasn't nearly that extensive. We just added more cabinets and countertops. We actually bought the floor model that Lowes was getting rid of... it was dirt cheap for great cabinets, but we had to disassemble at Lowes and install ourselves, so it's not really helpful. But, we did order extra cabinets from Lowes (on Route 2 in Warwick) and their staff was really great. We tried ordering a granite backsplash from Home Depot in Warwick, and they couldn't even get that right.. I found HD to be impossible to deal with. No one in the store ever knew what was going on, and no one ever called us back.

There are a few kitchen specialty stores on Jefferson Blvd in Warwick that we stopped in, too. No idea how prices/service compares, but you could try them if you're looking for more options and quotes.

  • Call Lowes to make an appt w/ Jack. (hope he's still there!!!) We had made an appt, and got lucky to get him, since we didn't have a referral of anyone there.  It was so nice to have his attention without other customers popping in.  I had called him so many times during our planning/renovation!  He even set up time once the cabinets were in to go over install instructions that he wrote up with great detail, for my husband and our contractor friend.
