Toddler garden ideas

Hi there, I'm new to this board!  My family is going to plant a vegetable garden this year, as well as planting raspberries.  I have a toddler and she loves to dig in the dirt!  I would like for her to be able to participate in this project.  Any suggestions for something she could plant in her own little plot that would be extremely hardy?  I'm picturing her wanting to water it alot and being overly hands-on.  :)  I just want her to have success in her first garden.  We are novice gardeners ourselves, so I'm not sure what would be the best things for her to plant.  The plot would be full-sun, Ohio climate. Thank you!

  • This looks like a really fun site: http://urbanext.illinois.edu/firstgarden/basics/index.cfm

We've put our 4 year old in charge of starting zinnia's from seed and tending them for the past 2 years.  They're "her" flowers, and she loves having them in a vase in her room when they're grown and cut.

Everything else we work on as a team.  They love the quickness of beans, peas, and lettuce (which you can get in the ground as soon as the snows gone and the earth is "defrosted."  Plant from seed and watch them grow.  Tomatoes are fun with kids because, after they start to ripen, there's almost always at least one to pick every day.  We do cherry tomatoes just for the kids to rinse off and pop into their mouths.  We tried carrots for the first time last year.  Those were my 2 year old's favorite. He loved pulling them out of the ground (with a little help), wash them with the hose and gnaw on them outside.

Another thing your little girl could help with is bringing worms to the garden.  My daughter loved to dig and find worms in other places in the yard.  A great way to explain how soil works.

Have fun.  Good luck.  Take pictures.

  • Great ideas - thanks.  I love the worm idea and I KNOW my daughter would be totally into that!
  • Basil is really easy to grow from seed and very hardy as long as you give it LOTS of water.  And then she can help harvest it for meals.  :)
