Toddler Garden Ideas

Hi there, I'm new to this board!  My family is going to plant a vegetable garden this year, as well as planting raspberries.  I have a toddler and she loves to dig in the dirt!  I would like for her to be able to participate in this project.  Any suggestions for something she could plant in her own little plot that would be extremely hardy?  I'm picturing her wanting to water it alot and being overly hands-on.  :) We will supervise, of course.  I just want her to have success in her first garden.  We are novice gardeners ourselves, so I'm not sure what would be the best things for her to plant.  The plot would be full-sun, Ohio climate. Thank you!

Re: Toddler Garden Ideas

  • i would plant quick growing veggies like radish, peas and beans. My kids also like squash.  The hardest thing is waiting until things are ready to pick. My 2 year old picked a lot of green tomatoes last summer

  • when I was 3ish I had my "own" cherry tomato plant (I'm thinking it was a determine one that would stay lower to the ground), apparently. I have a feeling that my mom mostly looked out for its well-being!!
  • I think that it would be the most fun if it was stuff that she could then eat.  I love the idea of cherry or grape tomatoes - they grow pretty quick, they're pretty hardy, and she would get to eat the results of her labors!  Basil grows like a weed too, so that might be fun, too.  Then if you just picked up some mozzerella, she could have a nice little caprese salad from her very own garden!
  • You could let her plant flowers next to the veggies.  Then she could pick the flowers when the veggies are ready.
