Anyone been to Pediatric Heart Center?

At DD's 12 month appointment, her pediatrician noticed a heart murmur and recommend that we get it checked out by a specialist.  We have an appointment with Dr. Feit at the Pediatric Heart Center.  I was wondering if anyone has taken their little one there, and if so can you tell me what to expect?  She'll be getting an ultrasound of her heart done and an echocardiogram.  I'm nervous!  Thanks.

Re: Anyone been to Pediatric Heart Center?

  • No experience there but I had a heart murmur as a child that I outgrew by about age 9/10. Was never a big deal at all. Doc could only really hear it when I was sick. So from that perspective I hope it's a tiny one and nothing major at all!

  • Is it located in the Coro Center or is it the one associated with Women and Infants?  We've been to both, but if its the one in the Coro Center, Bella has been going there since she was born..we see Dr. Rotondo.  We've never had any issues...it's fine...not overly fancy, but the staff (other than the receptionist) is great and very friendly.  I'm thinking maybe she won't be getting an ultrasound AND an echocardiogram? The echo is exactly like an u/s - it's actually pretty interesting and informative to watch.  They'll probably play a DVD for DD because they have to lay pretty still...don't dress in too many layers because everytime we've been in there it's been hot as hades!!!  Good luck and let me know how you make out.....oh, and if it's the other place, let me know and I can tell you about that one too!

Yes, it's the Coro Center one.  I thought the lady said an u/s and echo, but it is entirely possible that I misunderstood (esp. after I read online that the echo is an ultrasound).  This should be interesting, getting DD to lay still - she is an "on the go" kinda gal and does not like to be restrained.  Yikes!  Thanks for the tip on it being hot in there too!

  • I haven't been there, we see Dr. Fahey in Worcester for Norah's plethora of heart issues. If she'll lay for a movie, great.

Some of things we already have to do with Norah is a restraint-type swaddle with her arms pinned behind her back, give her a bottle/pacifier and get her to sleep. If you can schedule her echo around naptime, it might really hep you out.

  • Yup....Both girls had heart murmurs at birth, both closed on their own. We saw Dr. Zielger and one other man I can't remember his name. Very nice. They watched videos while they had the stiff done and did just fine. Don't be too nervous!
  • yup, liam has been a few times and has had some different tests done. i was a crying nervous wreck the 1st time he went. he was so little. his murmur is still there and they want to see him again when he is 4.

good luck and let us know how she makes out!

oh and i also had a murmur when i was little and it closed on its own!

  • We saw Dr. Feit when DD was in utero as they thought she had a heart defect.  He was nice - a little full of himself, but what specialists aren't?

We go to Worcester for both our kids. Is your doc. out of Child Heart Associates? Small world. Anyway, both my kids have murmurs. Christian has a pulmonary stenosis I believe. Basically a valve is sticky. Gianna has a Stills murmur (they call it a musical heart) and it's really nothing. We were very nervous going to a pediatric cardiologist too; how can you not be. MY DH's sister died of a heart condition when she was 24 so I was freaking out. But fortunately for us her condition is not  genetic.

He's with UMass. I've been seeing him since I was 32w pg to monitor/diagnose Norah. She's got: ASD, VSD, pulmonary stenosis, a little bit of mitral stenosis,  both her atrium cavities are left atrium cavities (I guess, typically 1 is smooth walled and the other isn't, but that's not the case with Norah), her IVC is very narrow and doesn't do much but her azygos vein does all that work for her, oh and b/c of the heterotaxy, her atrial wall is super long and winding. ANNNND her heart is *just* a little off in it's placement (again, b/c of the heterotaxy) so you can hear it EVERYWHERE when you put a stethoscope on her.
