South Carolina family moving to Chattanooga or Nashville

My husband has accepted a job working out of our home.  We can choose anywhere in TN to live and he will be traveling to all of the Fire Dept., EMS, and Police stations at some point.

We were leaning towards Chattanooga since we had visited once before (for a few hours, literally)  However, it seems like there would be more to do in Nashville and it's also more central so less of a drive if he needs to hit up the West TN area.  Also, we love to travel so the airport in Nashville seems to have more options for the price.

We are in our mid 20's, have a 4 yr old boy, and another boy due in April.  We will probably rent for the first year before we buy a home.

Any suggestions on what Nashville areas to stay away from?  Good schools, convenient to stores (Target, Costco, Trader Joe's, farmers markets...etc)?

 Thanks!

Re: South Carolina family moving to Chattanooga or Nashville

  • Chatt is a really laid back place, there are also a lot of hippies there too..but if are into the chill scene then that place is perfect, there is also a lot of cool local things to do too. and Nashville is a great city. it is, of course, more fast paced. and like you said, it is central.

as for Nashville areas, i heard that Antioch is really not a safe place, which is off of bell road. the cool springs are (Frankline, Bellmeade) is really expensive living (more than surrounding areas). if you are looking for someone where out of Nashville, there is Springfield which is a small town or Clarskville (about 45 min. north of nashville) it is by the army base. it really is a good town, not to big, its a growing city. the cost of living is reasonable. of course, the south side of clarskville is the safest for children.

hope that helps and good luck finding a place here!

  • Signal Mountain in Chattanooga  and Ooltewah would be great places to live in Chattanooga.  I love it here...so pretty and less congested than Nashville.

  • I live in and love Nashville, and it definitely has it's advantages - but, I love Chattanooga - for the reasons previous posters mentioned.

If you do want Nashville, it depends on what you are looking for in your neighborhood.  I live in Hermitage and really love it here.  We're a few minutes from Mt. Juliet and a lot of development is happening there, so we have everything within a few miles of us. You mentioned Trader Joe's... I know a favorite with a lot of people in Middle TN is Publix (http://www.publix.com) and they can be found in most neighborhoods.

The city-data forum is a great place to get extra info specific to neighborhoods, and Apartments.com is good for rentals.  Good luck!

  • I realize that I am late on this. I have lived in Nashville & Chattanooga. While Nashville was great, I like Chattanooga A LOT better. I love to do things outdoors. Chattanooga has a lot mroe to offer in that aspect & is a better place to raise a family I think. Lots more to do. The nightlife isn't as good, but Atlanta is 1.5 hours away & Nashville is just over 2 hours.

It's not as crowded & the cost of living is lower. You get more house for your money here & the traffic really is not that bad. Also... it does not take that long to get across town. Chattanooga is a hub for the interstates....and it is easy to get to them.

What does your husband do? I am an EMT-IV.

  • I recently moved to Nashville. I'm from L.A. and absolutely love it in Nashville. We moved because we didn't want to raise a family in L.A. and the cost of living is a heck of a lot cheaper in Nashville. The people are really friendly and it's beautiful here.
