I'm looking to get my fist Brazilian (keeping in mind I've never waxed, but I did laser my armpits with a recent Groupon). I'm in the Anoka area, but can drive if need be...
Any suggestions where I should go? Anything I should know about before hand (prep/post care, etc).
TIA!
Re: Waxing in the Metro
Take some Advil about 2 hours before. Ask the salon how long the hair should be...I don't recall the exact recommended length. The place I went also recommended going during a certain time in your cycle because it might hurt less.
Leave your pride at the door. Brazilians are VERY up close and personal. Each pull stings really bad for about 3 seconds and then feels much better. I got some cream that is supposed to sooth your skin and reduce any ingrown hairs (Finipil? Something like that.)
BREATHE.
:-)
The best in the city, bar none hands down is The Refinery in Dinkytown. All of the girls there are good. I have been getting a Brazilian every three weeks like clockwork from Kris for years. Moving to Chicago recently threw a wrench in that schedule. And though I've found an esthetician here, she's definitely not as good as Kris.
Also - it really doesn't hurt that bad. Do NOT go to a salon where they charge $65-$75 for a Brazilian. Generally that price is prohibitive, meaning their estheticians don't do that many of them, generally take a long time to do, and aren't very good at it. At The Refinery, they have employees who only do waxing, therefore they're quick and much more professional. A Brazilian at the Refinery would take less than 15 minutes and trust me, you'll never go back to shaving!
i LOVE LOVE LOVE marina at spalon montage at 50th and france in Edina, although I don't know if she's still there, I cut her waxes out of my budget over two years ago because they're pricey. The Refinery is good, and honestly, the girls at the Juut school in uptown are really great, and it's cheap.
Don't do it right before your period because your skin will be sensitive, make sure you've got a lot grown out (at least 1/4 of an inch), take ibuprofen before, hell, have a glass of wine or 2 to make yourself more relaxed, it can be a bit awkward the first time a strange woman asks you to get on your hands and knees.
I see Carisa at Cole's Salon - Eagan Station location for all my esthetics and she is SO fantastic. She does an awesome job every time. I love that she's super down-to-earth, easy to talk to, and has such a calm and relaxed personality.... and she's not awkward, and very discreet :-)
Thanks, ladies! I'm surprised the price at The Refinery is only $30!?! I'm sure I can convince the H to let it slide.
I'll be making an appt soon!
I like the Refinery for general waxing (legs, regular bikini wax) but I like Juut in St. Paul better for Brazillians. They're way more expensive, but the woman I see there is amazing and gets the job done in like 15 minutes and it's pretty painless. She only does waxing, too, so she's great.
Also, your esthetician should not ask you to get into any weird position (such as on your hands and knees, mentioned above). That's unnecessary and probably means the person doesn't know what he/she is doing.
