I had my 3-hour glucose test on Saturday and I failed all 4 draws. So, I have gestational diabetes.
I got the results via Kaiser online, so I only had to wait a couple of hours. When I got the first draw (the fasting draw before they give you the drink from hell), my levels were high. Not too high, but they were over the max limit. I was pretty upset when I got the results and all I could say to J was "please don't be mad at me" because I was pretty angry with myself. I didn't think the results would affect me as much as they did, and it took my by surprise when I just started crying. My Dad (who has Type 1 developed from Type 2 diabetes) calmed me down a bit by talking to me about how this isn't my fault and there are so many factors that go into how your blood sugar levels change. Deep in my heart though, I do blame myself a bit. I feel like a failure but I know there is things I can do to make it better, but I can't make it go away.
So my doctor called this morning to confirm my results and let me know what the next step is which is an appointment with her nurse to teach me how to use the glucose meter (fun times). I'm not looking forward to it, but I'll take it over insulin shots. ((shudder))
While I was on the phone with her, she noticed I sounded congested and I told her I've been battling a cold for almost 2 weeks. She asked where I think I got it and I told her how my nephew has RSV and I'm around him a lot. She now wants me to come in this afternoon for a breathing test to make sure I'm getting enough air when I breathe. She said treatment could be anywhere from regular Robitussin (which I've been taking) to breathing treatments and/or an inhaler.
It's only Monday, and this is turning out to be one...interesting...week.
Re: Update on glucose test
Sorry about the GD results. If you need an ear to talk off, send me a PM. I've been a Type 1 for about 28 years. So - I know just about every trick in the book.
Did they supply a meter, or do you have to get one on your own? They have really good deals sometimes at Pharmacy stores (walgreens, target, etc.) And if you are into it, they come in cool colors.
For testing itself, the sides of your fingers tend to be less tender than if you prick your finger dead center. (Just as an aside.)
