Myself and my husband do not drink beer or much hard liquor either so we are thinking about trying some different types of wines. Since neither of us have really had any wine we wanted to get some ideas on what might be good rather than wasting money for stuff that might end up being not so good.
So recommendations anyone?
Re: Wine Lovers
We have a local winery called Fenestra, and their blend is called True Red. I don't know how far out they go, but that one is my favorite!
DH and I are not big wine drinkers, in fact I HATE most wines I've tried.
But I LOVE this wine my grandfather made for us for our wedding, it's a German white wine called "Liebfraumilch". Sweet but not too sweet, it's not dry either... the only bad thing is that it goes down like water!
This post just made my day as I just got home from work and sat down with a huge glass of wine to nest for a bit while DH cooks dinner
I love red wine and I'm not big on white (unless it is sweet). I am currently drinking Trader Joe's brand (2 buck Chuck) Shiraz which I love. I also really like Beringer White Zinfandel (I know, I know). Charles Shaw (TJ's brand) also has a Pinot Noir I really like as well.
My sister really likes Yellowtail Cabernet and I've tried it and its not bad, though not my favorite.
Whites are how I got started into wine
gewurztraminer is a good German sweet, but not as sweet as Reisling.
Ice wines are also good if you like sweet, but they're really really really sweet. Like you can only drink a small glass or your stomach will get upset, but its good.
My favorite white wine is Sauvignon Blanc (usually new zealand). They're usually not very sweet, a nice crisp, they remind me of like green bell pepper (and I"m not one to be all... mmm raspberries and oh, what is that? grass?)
Seaglass is a good sauvignon blanc that's like $10.
White Haven is my absolute favorite, but its like $23 (a little harder to find)
A favorite inexpensive blend that you can usually find anywhere that goes with just about anything is Shoofly "Buzz Cut"
I started into reds with Pinot Noir. There's usually very little tannins (what make your mouth feel dry). Greg Norman is awesome, as is Sketchbook and Veranda
Hope this helps! DH took a side job in a wine shop when were dating, so were big wine nerds :P
What kind of wine do you like? Wine tastes are super subjective, so I will give you my recommendations but also give the disclaimer that this is why Matt and I like, not what everyone likes. He likes sweet white wines (like Riesling) and I like reds. Prices are approximate, and obviously will vary based on where you live and even what store you buy it from.
Riesling:
Relax $9
Badger Mountain $15
Pinot Noir:
La Crema: $20
Cabernet:
Fetzer: $8
J Lohr $20
Rodney Strong $23
Chappallet Mountain Cuvee $40
Claret:
Francis Coppola $17
Red Zinfandel:
Rodney Strong Knotty Vines $20
Blends:
Joseph Phelps Insignia $150
I also like Target's Cabernet Wine Box. It's $17 for a box, which is 4 bottles and not bad at all.
ETA: Many people start with sweet white wines and gradually move into reds. I never liked white, and always hated white zinfandel. Everyone is different. I said that Matt doesn't like reds, but he does like to add a shot of red wine to his coke. It's called a Kalimotxo.
Chelley....Truro Winery...Lighthouse series.....DH took me there for my birthday....AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
And rock on for same taste of wines
Getting fit for IVF!
Beringers white zin. is a cheap wine, but it's good and I always fall back on it.
And I love riesling too.
I love wine! as a side note I've had a bottle tonight! "We" like the sweet reds, I love cabs. My personal go to is "barefoot" they have a Sweet red and its pretty yummy, as my H Like to call it kool-aid but better! also they're cab is pretty yummy for being under 5.00 most places.
Also check the Alcohol vol. which is on the sides of the bottle label the lower it is the less dry the wine is going to be, for a starter wine-o that the best.
Another idea is to check out your local "wine store" ( we have total wine and bevo) for wine testing day, and for a few $ you can sample different wines, best way to spend a Saturday or Sunday!!
let us know what you find that you like! I'm always looking to try other wines others like!
Blends are a good way to start. Menage a trois has a good red blend and an ok white blend for about 10-12 bucks. (Personally, I think the white tastes too much like chardonnay, which I don't care for.) Pinot grigios and sauvignon blancs are my go-to whites. Pomelo has a good sauvignon blanc in the $12 range, For reds, the Rosemont shiraz and pinot noir are good. If you're big steak eaters, I recommend a malbec - we get the Casillero del Diablo Malbec.
Also, Yellow Tail is decent wine for a reasonable price - the head of catering and I had a long chat one day about how these are the best wines just to have on hand for when you just want a glass at the end of the day. The shiraz-cabernet blend is good, as is the plain cabernet. I haven't tried their whites, though.
If you're willing to splurge a bit, Conundrum is a good table white wine, 7 Deadly Zins is a good zinfandel, and Frei Brothers make a really delicious cabernet. All of these are in the $20-25 range. But as someone else said, definitely hit up a local wine shop for a tasting, so that you can see what you like before you spend the $$.I love Moscato also! We served it at our wedding and I was surprised how many people hadn't had it/didn't realize it's considered champagne. It's sweet and delcious.
My dad has always been a Merlot drinker, so I started off trying Merlot but originally wasn't a huge fan. Like a pp said, I started with Pinot Noir, then Shiraz, then Merlots but after all of that, I've found I'm safest/more pleased with Cabernets (I've actually got my dad hooked too). I like bold smoky, nutty, fruity all together, but I still don't really like very dry.
As for whites, I like the 2 German types listed above. I prefer a sweeter white and typically go with Reisling.
However, like Erin said (I think) - it's really subjunctive to your taste and along with that, I think what you're eating plays a big role too. I'd never order a Reisling with a steak. I've found what I like with certain meals and I think that enhances the wine's flavoring.
I love Reisling as a dessert wine, but if I'm having something chocolate based, then I stick with a red. If we're just having a bottle of wine while watching a movie at home or something, I'm more likely to go with a white bc it's lighter. It really just depends!
