I think I may have an irrational fear of tsunamis

because I keep having bad dreams about them!

And I know this is so stupid, but I actually think twice about going to places that big tsunamis have hit. I know it is crazy. Am I the only one who has this thought cross their mind? Anything to assuage this ridiculous feeling?

Re: I think I may have an irrational fear of tsunamis

  • You are not alone I have the same fears and get nightmares about them.. It really doesn't help my fear that I moved next to the ocean either but I just have to think of statics and just not fear.I love the sea and not going to let my fear rule. Don't let them keep you from going places because the likely hood of you seeing one is very very rare. LOL this one time this huge military plane flew real low and it shook the house and made a horrible noise and I thought a Tsunami was coming.. I felt really stupid
  • I grew up near the ocean so it's not all beach areas, it is just the areas that have had devastating tsunamis in the past.  I won't let it stop me from going somewhere but it's silly that I even think about it. Glad I'm not alone.. lol.
  • Anywhere that is coastal, a tsunami could hit.  Are you going to avoid every single coastline, everywhere in the world, forever?  They are destructive and dangerous, but they're pretty rare.
  • I sometimes have dreams about tsunamis or tidal waves.  I don't think it's a fear.  All dreams have symbolism.  Here's what I found.  http://thedreamwell.wordpress.com/2008/10/24/dream-symbols-tidal-wave/

  • Seriously, dreams aside, the whole idea of a tsunami may just be the most frightening thing ever to me.

Can you imagine, chilling on the beach with a drink in hand and a book, and suddenly the water recedes?  You are caught between curiosity and HOLYCRAPINEEDTOGETOFHERENOW!!!

It freaks me out like nothing else.

    Indifferent

    This completely !!!

I went to the Tsunami memorial in Hilo on the Big Island Hawaii and it was so so sad because I could just see all those school kids thinking how cool it was that the water went out not knowing what was about to happen.. SAD SAD SAD but without that happening they wouldn't have the warnings and regulations they have now.

Hilo is a beautiful place and Tsunamis are just a way of life they have to deal with them. But usually they have enough warnings so everybody can get to safety.

  • Your not alone. I've had crippling night terrors of tsunamis for years. I used to love the beach then one day the VIVID nightmares began. i remember every detail. The water receding back into the ocean me trying to warn everyone and trying to run to safety. I can hear everything clearly as the first white line of water races towards us and grows. Its terrifying and i wake up heart pounding and gasping for breath. It's so real and I'd have them weekly...ever since the first I'm too scared to go back to my beloved beaches. I force myself to so i can try and get over the phobia. It's difficult. i wish you all the best
