XP: BC/TTC questions

I posted this on my local board too but I wanted your input too!

Hey girls! I just had a few questions... I have been on bc for about 8-9 years now (nonstop). DH & I are considering me going off it & TTC. From what I read in articles & what I have heard on here, it can take a while to get out of my system. The shot (which I'm on now, takes 8-10mths) or so I have read, but have only been on it for 5 mths, all the time before that was the pill.

Any advice?? How long did it take you to get preggers after bc? We just moved into our house & are definitely still getting settled in but if its gonna take almost a year to get out of my system, I figured why not get off it now? But I just don't want it to happen right away.... does that make sense?

I plan on talking to my ob/gyn about it, but I wanted to ask you ladies too.

 TIA!

  • But I just don't want it to happen right away....

For this reason alone, I think you should stay on your BC. Yes, it can take a while for BC to get out of your system entirely, especially if you have been on it for a long time, but for some people, it doesn't take long at all. There is really no way to know beforehand (to my knowledge) how long it will take to get out of YOUR system. So I would go off the BC when you are ready to be pregnant. Because you could be pregnant in a year, or a month, you just don't know.

  • Well, don't get me wrong here.. We are ready & want to get pg, just not in the next month or two. Like I said, we're still settling in our new house & stuff. That's what I meant by that, not that we're not ready or would not be happy if it happened so fast but I really don't think it will. That's why I asked anyone about past experiences.

  • This might be a little different for the shot - but I asked my OB/GYN about this same thing and she said it's out of your system as soon as you stop taking it. So for me (I use Nuvaring), the hormones are out of my system as soon as I take it out. I think when we read that it takes x months for bc to get out of our system....I think really it just takes that long for our bodies to regulate and stuff.

Talk to your OB/GYN about it. If you want to go off bc, use condoms after you go off so you can still prevent pregnancy but allow your body to adjust.

  • We are also getting ready to TTC and I had the same question-my Dr. said that after one day off the pill it is out of your system (that's why you have to take it daily) and that many women get pregnant immediately after going off the pill.   He said he recommended waiting a month or two before TTC after stopping the pill so they can accurately date the pregnancy or something, but it will be out of your system immediately.

It may take your body a while to regulate though.  We decided to go off the pill one month before we TTC.  And if it happens this month than we will still be happy.

I would say that as long as you would be ok with getting pregnant, to stop the pill a few months before you want to TTC.  Then use a back up method until you are ready.

Were your periods regular before you starting taking BC?

This was my situation...I took the ring out at the time I would have and just never put it back in.  I had my period for the usual week and then never got it again, got my BFP 40 days after the start of the last period.

Although when I was on the pill and asked my OB about how long it would take, she said it could take a month or two, but you shouldn't stop taking it (or using another form of bc) if you aren't ready to be pregnant right away because you never know, some people are able to conceive right away.

    HTH!

  • It takes awhile to regulate your body again even if the hormones are out of your system.  So it might make it difficult if you are trying to chart to TTC.

When I went off BC to start NFP, it didn't take long at all for me to regulate though...TMI but I was super regular to begin with.  Who knows if that has anything to do with it.
