Anybody buy their own health insurance?

I have student health insurance, but my husband won't have insurance when he gets here, so I've been trying to find out about health insurance. I think we may just get a temporary insurance until he finds a full time job since he may get coverage through that. BUT I want to look in to different coverages just to get an idea of how much they cost.

Any wisdom to impart, oh wise Alabama nesties? :-D

Re: Anybody buy their own health insurance?

  • DH and I both purchase our own insurance.  My company doesn't offer it and DH is self employed.  We use Individual Blue from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama.  It's a pretty good policy and it's not too expensive either.  I would definitely look into it.  Just google BCBS of alabama.
  • Thanks! That's one I hadn't found yet! I'm going to check that out now.

  • Do you have the option to put him on your student health insurance at all?  That may be a cheap way to go for the short-term.

Of course, having student health insurance myself, I realize how crap-tastic it is....

  • It is VERY craptastic. lol

Well, I thought about that, but it's pretty expensive to add him (considering how awful the plan is). Since it's so crappy I'd rather spend the money on getting a good plan for him b/c he does need it for prescriptions, dr. visits, etc.?

In Australia they have socialized medicine so we both don't have a clue about health insurance (before I moved to Oz I was on my parents' insurance and never paid attention :-/ ).

  • I have insurance through my dh work but I do know of a few people that have had Aflac and BCBS. Both are pretty good. Aflac pays you for time you are in the hospital and off work. It has some perks that BCBS doesn't but I do not know how much more it might be. Good Luck. I know it's a pain!

  • I did BCBS too. It's too expensive for me to be on my husband's insurance. anyway, my plan is under 'individual blue' :)

  • yep,I was going  also suggest BC/BS.  I have been researching individual policies should I ever be able to do photography full time and lose my benefits with my full-time job.  The prices I found with them are just about the exact same I pay with my company!!
  • We also have Individual Blue.  It's a pretty good price - about $200 cheaper per 2 months than the ALFA plan we were originally going to use.  I'm sure you've already looked into it by now - but just FYI, there is a one-year maternity waiting period!  Also, if you or your DH is significantly younger than the other, you can sign up under the younger person and save a little $.
