Any Turbo Tax users out there?

We are using this for the first time and had a couple of quesitons.  Actually, maybe even non-users can help.

Don't you use your school taxes that you've paid on your tax return?  I can't seem to find where to enter that it, and the guy at TT couldn't figure it out either.  It is stapled to our return from last yeat (that was prepared) but I don't see where it was used.

Also, DH was saying that people at work told him to make sure we get the $800 credit for working people per Obama's plan.  I didn't see this come up either. This is the first time we are doing our taxes on our own so any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Any Turbo Tax users out there?

  • I think your school taxes are part of your property taxes paid and there should be a line on Schedule A for that (or a TurboTax question that asks you to plug in your property taxes paid)

I'm not positive on the working families credit, but Turbo Tax usually addresses all available credits via their Q&A. If you're not sure, the irs.gov site has the 1040 instructions on it and you can look for the credit. Didn't that go away this year, or get applied to our paychecks vs. a tax credit?  I am not much help on that one, sorry.

  • School taxes are included in property taxes paid.  When we went through TT guided us through the real estate section and we just plugged things in where they fit.  The making work credit is also addressed right at the end.  I recommend just letting it do its thing from the beginning and following along instead of trying to find specific deductions.  Good luck!

  • Ok, I went back and looked for property taxes and added the school tax in with our property taxes, so that you for that info.  I had everything entered in, and the man from TT was on the phone with me for most of my entering, but he couldn't figure out where to put it.  So if I finish, do my error checking, then the work credit will come up?  We have so many forms to enter, plus all my business stuff so it was a little overwhelming to me to do this first time.

    Thanks for the help!!

  • I remember using it the first year after i started my business and it was a bear! I can't help specifically, we have since hired a CPA, but it does come through in the error checking section if i remember correctly.

    Here's to a nice return!
