Name change snafu (rant)

We e-filed our taxes this weekend, and our state return got rejected. Why, you may ask? Because the MA Dept. of Revenue didn't recognize my married name as belonging to my social security number. Even though the state of MA is the one who issued our marriage certificate, even though my name was legally changed on everything three + months ago, and even though they've been taking money all along from someone whose social security number they don't appear to recognize. No dice.

So now I have to mail everything in, along with all kinds of documentation so they get their heads out of their a**es and we get our refund. (Or their computer's head out of its arse, at least.) It's not a huge deal in the long run, I know, but it's so. effing. annoying. Plus, my husband apparently threw out the health care documentation (which is a requirement in MA), so, hopefully, they will accept a copy of his health insurance card in its place. And I may have given him a look and had a "THIS IS WHY WE CANT HAVE NICE THINGS!" moment with him, because who DOES that?

Rant over.

  • oh no! this makes me nervous to file taxes. I hope you're able to get it straightened out. It's such a pain to get extra copies of the ML much less mail them into different companies that all have different processes and requirements.
  • So annoying!  I just know I will run into some sort of problems when our taxes get filed.  Luckily, I did go to my local social security office and update my social security number into my married name so I am hoping I don't have the same problem as you did...
  • Ugh, now I'm dreading this. I have 2 separate W2's in 2 different names. And one of those W2's is from CT, the other is from MA. I get the feeling this is going to be a sh!t show.

  • Thanks, everyone. It's just so aggravating!  I changed my name with social security a week or two after we got back from the honeymoon, so it got changed at work by early November. Stupid MA.  Grrr.
