Camping - Our plan is thwarted

So every year my DH and I go camping up north at Tettagouche and have a few sites that we prefer.  Unfortunately  and apparently I am not on the ball this year for reservations and screwed myself.  Too late. Does anyone have recommendations for perfect campgrounds.  We adored the seclusion of Tettagouche's cart in sites for our hyper dogs and the fantastic hiking and biking.  We've tried Gooseberry before as well.  Any recommendations?  We are looking for a semi secluded site (cart in not hike in) that offers great views/hiking and potentially biking that is dog friendly.  Willing to go North/south/east/west with about a 4 hour drive. Any summer/fall timing is ok too.

Re: Camping - Our plan is thwarted

  • Split Rock has some very nice cart-in sites... I can't remember specifically which sites we liked though.  I seem to remember us doing some biking while we were there too.  Not sure about dogs though...
  • I just made reservations for Split Rock on Saturday (they have awesome cart in sites right along Lake Superior) and there were some openings left for August and September and one for July 5 and 6.  The best sites are 11 and 13 IMO.  11 is a little more visible from the hiking path but it backs up to a cliff sort of thing that seems like it would act as a nice wind break.  Both are on a cute rocky beach.

If you like camping in the North Shore area, I highly recommend Camping the North Shore.  It has tons of super detailed info on campgrounds in the area, including the best sites and campgrounds.

Hopefully Laurie will chime in about Glendalaugh (or however it's spelled) - she recommended it to me yesterday.  They have cart in and canoe in sites.

Yup, Glendalough is great, it's a bit past Alexandria.  We did the canoe in site over Labor Day weekend and really enjoyed it.  Not sure if Temperance River State Park has cart-in sites but there's lots of good hiking there.  St. Croix State Park also has some hike-in sites (like 100-300yds) so not too far.

  • Not sure about cart in sites but we've camped at Cascade River a couple times and like it.
  • Thanks so much!  We've biked from Gooseberry to Split Rock and hiked around there. I forgot they had camping sites.  I will check out the others as well.  I really appreciate your help!
