I'd like to start a veggie garden, but I'm a total newb
And I have nooooo clue where to start or what to do.
I live in an area that's really sandy, so I know I'd have to bring in lots of dirt. I also live in MI, if that helps.

If you have any room, I'd suggest a small (3' x 3' or 4' x 4') raised bed garden. You can find instructions just by googling. Research frost dates in your area (the USDA website is a good start) so you can get a good idea of when to plant. You can start from seeds indoors, but I "cheat" and just buy seedlings and toss them in the garden. So far, so good.
You can also do container gardening if you have less room.

My local master gardener extension has been very helpful. Talk to people there.
I'm in NW Ohio and my parents live in SE MI. I would say it depends on your soil.
My first year I planted 6 or 7 tomato plants and stuck basil around them in the "bare" areas. I just dug out a hole in the ground and filled it with packaged top/soil dirt. I had a crazy good selection of tomatoes and froze a lot of basil.
My second year I did tomatoes, green beans, raddishes (from seed), corn, strawberries and herbs. I grew the herbs in hanging baskets. The others I grew in Boxes my hubby built out of old deck wood we got scrap from a neighbor. i believe they are 6x4. We got compost from DH's nana and then filled it with dirt and compost mix from a local mulch place.
The strawberries spread out and grew all over but no fruit. I had tomato blight so I only was able to keep one plant that didn't get infected. The beans and radishes grew great and I got 2 cars out of the 8 ears I planted. (not too shabby I thought.)
