XP: Anyone use rain barrels?

We're looking into buying some this weekend at our local home show - they claim they could save us all sorts of $$$$$ in caring for our lawn and garden.

Anyone use them that can vouch for them?

Re: XP: Anyone use rain barrels?

  • Once I have my own home I think I would invest! I think about me watering my future garden ::sigh:: it just seems all that excess runoff rainwater would be an easy solution with a one time cost! Good luck! <sorry I couldnt help more, Im just in envy>
  • We have this one. I think to save all kinds of money you are going to have to get several that you link together. We don't use ours for the lawn (just the gardens) but I would think you have had to get some sort of pump for it to get it to water your lawn.
  • I actually work for a program where we help people make their own for free.  We get the barrels donated from Coca-Cola.  I have 3 linked together and they're great!  Even in the worst summer drought I don't run out of water for my garden.

  • Elvie, do you have information that you can share?  We're building our home and we thought about this for watering our lawn.

  • We got one last summer.  I'm glad we did but I don't know that it really saved us a significant amount of money.  We used it to water the flower gardens and that's pretty much it.  I can't imagine how we would water the lawn with it unless we got some sort of adaptor that increased flow so we could hook it up to a sprinler (and is that sort of thing even available???).

  • I posted a link up above for anyone who's interested in making one.

Also, I have a small submersible pump I use with mine.  MUCH faster watering and we used it to water our new sod when we put it in.
