Emergency crockpot help!

I'm making cheeky's pulled pork.  The only size pork shoulder at the f'in market last night was 10 lbs.  So, on that note, it doesn't really fit in my 6 qt crockpot and the cover is not on tightly!  Is it going to be ruined?  Is there anything I can do?  Obviously I can't run out and get a bigger crockpot at this hour, and the pulled pork is for DD's bday party tomorrow.  help!!  F'in Shaw's!!!!  GRRRR!

  • Cut it down.  Like almost in half, then save the other half to cook another time.  Has it already been frozen?  If not, freeze it with the rub right on it, or, when you wake up tomorrow, cook the other half.  But yeah, you can't run a Crockpot more than 3/4 full, it doesn't cook right.

    The problem is the bone - can I cut through the bone with a knife?! 

  • Ah ***, it's got a bone?  Well, if you think you can cut through it, no prob.  If not, bake it in a low oven (like 250-300) for about 5 hours.

    yes f'in bone.  f'in shaws, no small porks, i was so not happy last night, but what can you do??  didn't think i would have this issue!

  • Okay, I think we're good to go.  I was able to trim off a few lbs of the meat around the bone area, and the cover fits now.  PHEW.  Thank you SO much! 
  • sorry that i didn't see this last night! i had a similar problem with an almost 10lb shoulder before the super bowl. once we were able to pull some of the meat off the bone, we just cooked it another few hours.

    fyi: if that is a problem next time, i think you can probably take it to the butchers at shaws and have them cut it for you so you could chuck half in the freezer.

  • Yes, you can usually pick out a piece of meat in the market and have the butcher cut it differently for you. They'll even grind up your own preferred cut (getting ground beef out of serloin, etc.)

  • That is good to know about the butcher cutting it down to size - unfortunately, I was there at 9pm (and in a hurry to get home to do the rub), so I don't think there was anyone behind the butcher counter.  Otherwise, I definitely would have asked what they had in the back.

    It ended coming out alright.  A good portion of it was way too dry to shred, but the parts that I could shred up tasted very good.  Lesson learned that when the recipe calls for a 6-8 lb piece o' meat, stick to that size!  Thanks Pam for taking time away from your hubby to answer my frantic question!  You rock.
