Hey y'all...I saw there was a post below about changing your name (which I have not done yet)...Just wanted to know how you all handled post-wedding taxes the first time. We want to file jointly, and I was thinking I'd just wait until after we did our taxes (and got our refund) to change my name legally. Did anyone do this? If so, did you have any problems filing jointly even though you have two different last names? I didn't think it would matter since some married couples choose not to ever take the same last name, but now my other recently-married friend has me doubtful. My main needs(wants) are to file ASAP (so we can use the refund $ to help pay for our flights back east for the AHR) and to file jointly.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Last year was the first time I ever did my taxes myself so this is all kind of new territory even without the new marital status.
Re: Filing Jointly on Taxes before or after name change?
Ditto PP. Your name is irrelevant. You are legally married, so that's all that matters.
We are not sure if we are filing jointly or going to file "married filing separately". We have to run the numbers and see what the best option is for us.
